The automotive world is abuzz with the latest unveiling from Zeekr, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) SUV that boasts an electric range of up to 328 kilometers. This new model, the Zeekr 8X, is built on the same platform as the Lotus Eletre and Emeya, promising a sporty driving experience. The announcement comes as Zeekr continues to expand its lineup under the Geely Group umbrella, leveraging shared technologies and platforms.

The Zeekr 8X shares several components with its larger sibling, the Zeekr 9X SUV, including the battery and drivetrain hardware. Despite its smaller size, the 8X still measures a substantial 5100mm in length, 1998mm in width, and features a 3069mm wheelbase. These dimensions make it 139mm shorter than the flagship 9X, positioning it in the same league as the Audi Q7 in terms of size.

Design and Features

Zeekr has confirmed that the 8X will be available in both five- and six-seat configurations, with the latter offering individually adjustable second-row captain’s chairs. This flexibility in seating arrangements is designed to cater to a variety of consumer preferences, enhancing the vehicle’s appeal.

Stylistically, the 8X bears a resemblance to other Zeekr models such as the 009 People Mover and the 9X SUV. It features a prominent chrome grille and distinctive C-shaped LED headlights. Unlike the more angular 9X, the 8X adopts a slightly rounded form, with sculpted doors and a tapered roofline that contribute to its aerodynamic profile. For the Chinese market, buyers will have the option of 20-, 21-, or 22-inch wheels, allowing for further customization.

Powertrain and Performance

While full powertrain details are yet to be disclosed, information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reveals that the 8X will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, capable of producing 205kW. Buyers will have a choice between two battery options: a 55.1kWh or a 70kWh unit. The shorter-range model is rated for 256km on electric power alone, while the high-capacity version can achieve up to 328km, based on Chinese rating protocols.

The 70kWh battery in the 9X is capable of ‘6C’ charging speeds, or peak charging at six times the battery’s capacity (420kW) on a compatible charger.

It is anticipated that the 8X will follow the 9X in offering a three-motor, 1030kW combined output all-wheel drive system, although specifics on the electric motors remain under wraps. The lightest version of the 8X has a kerb weight of 2660kg, with the heaviest variant weighing 2820kg, which is approximately 180kg more than the Lotus Eletre.

Market Expectations and Future Plans

The 2026 Zeekr 8X is set to launch in China before mid-2026, with plans for international availability to be announced later. This global expansion aligns with Zeekr’s strategy to establish itself as a significant player in the electric vehicle market, leveraging its technological advancements and strategic partnerships.

Industry experts suggest that the introduction of the 8X could bolster Zeekr’s position, especially in markets outside China where demand for versatile, eco-friendly SUVs is on the rise.
