Chinese premium auto brand Zeekr is set to redefine the electric people mover market with its latest power upgrade. The updated Zeekr 009, as revealed in a filing with the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, will boast an astonishing total power output of 680kW. This marks a significant leap from its already impressive 450kW, making it one of the most powerful vehicles in its class.

The announcement comes as Zeekr prepares for the Beijing Motor Show in April, where the updated 009 is expected to make its debut. Despite the substantial increase in power, the vehicle’s exterior design remains unchanged, focusing instead on enhancements beneath the surface.

Technological Advancements Under the Hood

Zeekr’s latest iteration of the 009 will reportedly adopt a 900V electrical architecture, an upgrade from the 800V system introduced in China in 2024. This move is anticipated to result in faster charging times, although specific details about the battery remain undisclosed. In contrast, the current Australian-market 009 still operates on a 400V system, with a maximum DC fast-charge rate of 205kW.

The vehicle utilizes a 116kWh lithium manganese cobalt (NMC) battery and offers both 250kW/373Nm single-motor front-wheel drive and 450kW/693Nm dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrains. The Chinese-market 009 provides even more powerful options, including a 310kW/440Nm single-motor front-wheel drive and a 580kW/810Nm dual-motor all-wheel drive.

Zeekr’s Position in the Global Market

Zeekr, owned by Chinese automotive giant Geely, is part of a broader family that includes brands like Polestar, Lotus, and Volvo. Notably, Volvo markets a version of the 009 under the name EM90. Zeekr’s entry into the Australian market in late 2024 with the X small electric SUV and the 009 people mover set the stage for its growing influence. However, it was the introduction of the 7X mid-size electric SUV in late 2025 that truly accelerated the brand’s success in Australia.

In 2025, Zeekr delivered 1206 units of the 7X, nearly doubling the sales of the smaller X, which recorded 665 units. The 009, while trailing in third place with 123 units, still outperformed competitors like the Mercedes-Benz EQV, which sold just 42 units.

Implications and Future Prospects

The move to enhance the Zeekr 009’s power output reflects a broader trend in the automotive industry towards high-performance electric vehicles. As consumers increasingly prioritize both sustainability and performance, manufacturers are compelled to innovate and push the boundaries of what electric vehicles can achieve.

According to industry experts, the introduction of a 900V system could set a new standard for electric vehicles, potentially influencing other manufacturers to adopt similar technologies. The increased power and faster charging capabilities are likely to appeal to a growing market segment that values efficiency without compromising on power.

Looking ahead, Zeekr’s strategy appears focused on expanding its global footprint and solidifying its position as a leader in the premium electric vehicle market. As the brand continues to innovate and introduce new models, it will be interesting to see how competitors respond and what further advancements Zeekr will bring to the table.

With the automotive industry on the cusp of significant technological advancements, the updated Zeekr 009 represents a bold step forward in the evolution of electric people movers. As the brand gears up for the Beijing Motor Show, all eyes will be on Zeekr to see how this powerful new model will perform in the market.
