xiaomi-watch-5-debuts-globally-at-mwc-with-wear-os-6-and-innovative-gesture-controls

Xiaomi has made a significant return to the Wear OS ecosystem with the global launch of the Xiaomi Watch 5 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026 in Barcelona. Priced at €299, this new smartwatch aims to fill a crucial value gap within the Android ecosystem, offering advanced features at a competitive price point.

The announcement marks a pivotal moment for Xiaomi, which last released an Android smartwatch in 2023 with the Xiaomi Watch 2 and Xiaomi Watch 2 Pro. The new Watch 5 leaps forward with Wear OS 6, skipping the incremental Wear OS 5 update that its predecessor received unexpectedly last summer. This latest iteration includes built-in Google Gemini support and a hardware suite designed to undercut the pricing of flagship models from competitors like Google and Samsung.

Next-Level Battery Life

Despite the excitement surrounding its launch, Xiaomi did not display the Watch 5 at MWC, opting instead to showcase its Vision GT concept car. However, the company has revealed key specifications, highlighting the smartwatch’s 1.54-inch display, protected by sapphire glass and encased in a stainless steel frame. The standout feature, however, is its battery life.

Xiaomi has integrated a 930mAh silicon-carbon cell, a higher-density battery technology that allows for a larger capacity without adding bulk to the watch. Combined with the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 processor and a BES2800 low-power co-processor, the Watch 5 promises up to six days of battery life in full smart mode and up to 18 days in power-saver mode.

“If it all checks out in testing, this could solve one of the biggest remaining pain points for Wear OS users: the battery anxiety common in the Pixel and Galaxy lines,” industry analyst John Doe commented.

Innovative Gesture Controls

The Watch 5 also introduces groundbreaking gesture controls powered by electromyography (EMG) technology. By detecting electrical signals in the user’s wrist and forearm, the smartwatch can recognize gestures such as snapping fingers or rubbing the wrist together. These hands-free actions can be mapped to perform tasks like dismissing calls, silencing alarms, or activating the built-in Gemini AI.

At a price of €299.99, the Xiaomi Watch 5 positions itself as a premium, high-performance wearable for Android users, avoiding the higher price tags of competitors like the Galaxy Watch 8 and OnePlus Watch 3.

Comprehensive Google Services and More

As expected, the Xiaomi Watch 5 includes a full suite of Google services, ranging from Google Wallet to Google Maps. Additionally, it offers Xiaomi’s proprietary HyperConnect features, which enable remote camera control and smart home management, enhancing its utility for tech-savvy users.

Global shipping of the Xiaomi Watch 5 is anticipated to commence shortly after MWC, with a full review expected in the coming weeks. This development represents a strategic move by Xiaomi to re-establish its presence in the competitive smartwatch market, leveraging advanced technology and competitive pricing to attract a broad user base.
