As the Western Bulldogs prepare to face the Brisbane Lions, coach Luke Beveridge has shared insights into the team’s strategy and mindset. Reflecting on their previous encounter during the Gather Round, Beveridge highlighted both the challenges and the lessons learned from that experience.

“The reflection aspect maybe gives you some element of confidence or belief, but there was a reminder too of how potent they can be,” Beveridge remarked. “We were up by a bit in that game. It was a hot day, and they turned it around pretty quickly.”

His comments underscore the need for vigilance against a team known for its ability to capitalize on even the smallest opportunities. “We had a couple of turnover errors that day with Brisbane…then one or two experienced players gave the ball back unnecessarily and they gained some momentum. The Lions don’t need much of a trigger to be able to do that. That’ll keep us on edge.”

Facing Top 8 Teams: A Test of Resilience

The Bulldogs’ record against top-tier teams has been a topic of discussion, but Beveridge remains unfazed by the narrative. “The aspect of the storyline around that won’t filter in at all. As I’ve said before, in all those games we’ve been in them,” he stated confidently.

Despite narrow losses to strong sides, Beveridge sees these matches as opportunities rather than setbacks. “We know where they’ve beaten us, and in what aspects of the game. There are so many variables in the game that relate to better opposition just getting you by two or three goals. That won’t even creep in.”

Looking ahead, the Bulldogs face three teams ranked above them in their final six games. “What is exciting is the opportunity. We still play three teams who are above us in the last six games. We’ve got three opportunities there,” Beveridge emphasized.

Team Selection and Health Updates

Team selection for the upcoming match against Brisbane is influenced by recent performances and player health. “Over the years we’ve picked the team based on performance and readiness,” Beveridge explained. Liam Jones, who has been recovering from illness and minor injuries, is a potential candidate for the squad.

“The team this week will be selected on previous state-league performances and health, to be ready for Brisbane,” Beveridge noted. “So there’ll be some changes this week, but we’ll work through it. It’s an important session and we’ve got a flight tomorrow, so we’ve got to have a squad picked by the end of the day. Liam will definitely be in the mix and in discussion.”

Injury Concerns and Player Availability

Injuries have also played a role in shaping the Bulldogs’ lineup. Beveridge provided updates on the current status of the team. “We went public with Harvey Gallagher’s foot injury yesterday, which was sort of out of the blue. I don’t think we’ve had any others,” he reported.

Additionally, the team is monitoring the health of Harmsey, who has been battling illness. “Harmsey, he’s really ill. We’ve only just got him back to the Club – he was away from the club for over a week, just really sick. So he’s going to train today but he may not even play.”

Despite these challenges, Beveridge remains optimistic. “We’ve had one or two had some left field things come up, but everyone else who played that game last week against Adelaide should be available for selection.”

Looking Ahead: Strategic Preparations

The Bulldogs’ preparation for the Brisbane clash involves a strategic approach that acknowledges the strengths of their opponents while focusing on their own capabilities. Beveridge’s comments reflect a balance of respect and determination.

As the team gears up for the match, the focus remains on executing their game plan effectively and leveraging the opportunities that lie ahead. With several critical matches on the horizon, the Bulldogs are poised to demonstrate their resilience and competitive spirit.

The upcoming game against the Lions is not just another fixture; it’s a chance for the Bulldogs to solidify their standing and showcase their growth throughout the season. As Beveridge and his team prepare to take on this challenge, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how the narrative unfolds.
