Head of List Management and Recruiting Matt Clarke has expressed satisfaction with the West Coast Eagles’ performance during the trade period, highlighting the acquisition of a significant talent while maintaining a focus on long-term growth. The Eagles have successfully signed two-time premiership defender Brandon Starcevich from Brisbane, a move that Clarke considers a major positive for the club.
Clarke praised Starcevich’s competitive nature and his potential to elevate the team’s standards. “He’s very competitive, a determined player who will bring great standards to our group,” Clarke told Trade Radio on Friday. “The way he trains and plays will give real confidence to the players down back.”
Strategic Moves and Collaborations
The Eagles have been strategic in their approach, working closely with Brisbane’s medical team and Starcevich’s management to ensure alignment on his health and readiness. “We had great dialogue with our medical staff and theirs, and we’re comfortable with where everything sits,” Clarke said.
In addition to securing Starcevich, the Eagles facilitated several other significant moves. Liam Ryan’s transfer to St Kilda was completed, and free agent Oscar Allen departed in exchange for a valuable draft pick. The club also orchestrated a trade sending Campbell Chesser to Carlton, offering the young midfielder a fresh opportunity.
Defensive Priorities and Future Prospects
On the defensive front, Clarke confirmed that Richmond’s Tylar Young is a priority for the Eagles, with a deal nearing completion. “We had prioritised Tylar Young from Richmond as the key back,” he said. “He’s committed to joining us, it’s just a matter of getting the deal done.”
Meanwhile, discussions are ongoing with Brisbane regarding Deven Robertson, who is eager to return to Western Australia. Clarke noted, “Dev wants to come across. He’s a tough midfielder with good standards and attitude and he’ll be a great addition to our group.”
Balancing Youth and Experience
Clarke emphasized the importance of balancing youthful energy with experienced leadership. “We’re looking at where our list is at from an age demographic. We’d love some more senior depth in those roles,” Clarke said. He highlighted the impact of senior players like Jack Graham, Liam Baker, Matt Owies, and Matt Flynn, who have already contributed positively to the club.
“It’s been a real target to bring in those senior guys to keep the standards high,” Clarke stated.
Draft Strategy and Future Outlook
Despite strong interest from rival clubs, Clarke affirmed the Eagles’ commitment to utilizing their top draft picks. West Coast is poised to influence the draft significantly next month, holding the first two selections for the first time in the club’s history.
“They’ve been popular, but it would have to be a pretty good deal to change our mind,” Clarke said. “We’re pretty set on using those picks.”
The Continental Tyres AFL Trade Period, powered by Tyrepower, will conclude on Wednesday at 4.30pm WST, marking the end of a dynamic period for the Eagles as they position themselves for future success.
