On Christmas Day, the beaches of Perth became a haven for tens of thousands of West Australians seeking relief from a sweltering heatwave. Dressed in festive attire, beachgoers braved temperatures that soared to a sizzling 42.1°C, narrowly missing the record set in 2021 when the mercury hit 42.8°C.

By mid-afternoon, Perth recorded its peak temperature, while the early morning saw temperatures dip to just 24.8°C, avoiding the highest minimum temperature on record. City Beach was among the most popular spots, bustling with families in matching shirts and groups of friends enjoying food and drink.

Beach Celebrations and Coping with the Heat

Nick Slattery, who spent the morning at the beach with his family, shared how they planned to stay cool. “We will have a water pistol fight at the end of the day to really cool ourselves down,” he explained. “We’ll have the water pistols but end up just having the hose on and then just a lot of ice and the air conditioning on full blast.”

Slattery described their festive meal, starting with seafood, followed by traditional Christmas dishes, and culminating with a homemade Christmas pudding. “It’s full scale, she starts the pudding in November and gets it all prepared,” he said, referring to his mother’s culinary efforts.

Gráinne Arkins, who spent the morning with friends from Ireland and the UK, expressed her excitement about experiencing a Perth Christmas. “It’s a bit different from a Christmas at home but yeah, it’ll be unreal,” she noted. Despite the distance from home, Arkins ensured a taste of Ireland with a traditional breakfast and a barbecue dinner.

Alternative Spots and Weather Variations

Beyond the beaches, Matilda Bay also attracted families seeking shade and a chance to cool off in the Swan River. Russell Boulden, there with his family, appreciated the chance to try out new Christmas gifts like a paddle board. “After the hot weather we’ve had, it’s bloody brilliant down here,” he remarked.

Elsewhere in Perth, temperatures exceeded 40°C, with areas like Gooseberry Hill, Perth Airport, and the Swan Valley recording highs of 43°C, 42.8°C, and 41.4°C respectively. While Perth sweltered, other parts of Australia experienced varied weather. In Tasmania, Mount Wellington awoke to snow, creating a rare white Christmas.

“Most mainland capitals enjoyed mild weather, but Melbourne bristled through a maximum of just 17°C,” reported meteorologists.

National and International Context

In Sydney, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese delivered a Christmas message after volunteering at the Rev Bill Crews Foundation, a charity offering free meals to those in need. He addressed recent tragedies, emphasizing the spirit of hope and unity that Christmas embodies. “Today, we particularly wrap our arms around the Jewish community,” he stated, reflecting on the Bondi massacre during Hannukah.

Meanwhile, the Cocos Islands faced near-brush conditions with Tropical Cyclone Grant, experiencing strong winds and heavy rains, though these eased as the storm passed.

Looking Ahead: Weather Forecast

Relief is on the horizon for Perth residents, with temperatures expected to drop to the high 20s as a cold front moves through the State’s south coast. The forecast for the coming days promises cooler conditions:

  • Boxing Day: Shower or two clearing, 21°C – 25°C
  • December 27: Mostly sunny, 13°C – 25°C
