On December 15, the Wodonga Cemetery became a place of solemn remembrance as around 400 mourners gathered to bid farewell to Lauren Hutchinson, a beloved mother from Walbundrie. At just 28 years old, Lauren’s life was tragically cut short by Ewing sarcoma cancer, a battle she faced with unwavering courage.

The atmosphere was poignant as the song “Landslide” played, accompanying the procession of Lauren’s casket. Described by those who knew her as having a “lightness” and a belief that “love was stronger than fear,” Lauren’s legacy was celebrated by family and friends who gathered to honor her memory.

A Life of Dreams and Determination

Lauren Hutchinson, a radiation therapist, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in June. Despite the diagnosis, she chose not to learn her life expectancy, instead focusing on making the most of her time with her family. Her husband, Chris, and their children, Henry and Mavis, were central to her life, as were her parents, Trish and Brett Lieschke, and her siblings, Blake and April.

Lauren’s sister, April Lieschke, shared cherished memories of Lauren’s adventurous spirit from childhood. Recalling their playful antics, she painted a picture of a mischievous and inquisitive young woman who was affectionately nicknamed “Floss” for her fiery red hair.

Memories of a Spirited Childhood

April reminisced about their childhood escapades, including “infamous hallway wrestling” and high-speed chases with toy cars. Lauren’s curiosity extended to scientific pursuits, such as her interest in cryogenics, which led to experiments with freezing bull ants.

As they grew older, these playful moments evolved into shared breakfasts and long conversations over coffee. Lauren’s love for horses was another enduring passion, fulfilled when her father finally gifted her a horse named Twiggy.

Academic and Professional Achievements

Lauren’s academic journey began at St Paul’s College Walla and continued at Billabong High School. Her sister fondly recalled her determination and excellence in academics and sports, noting that “no equation was too hard, no essay too daunting.”

Her love for music was another cherished talent, with recordings of her singing providing a comforting backdrop during the funeral service. Lauren pursued higher education at Charles Sturt University, initially studying psychology before finding her true calling in medical radiation science. Her career as a radiation therapist at GenesisCare allowed her to help countless patients, fulfilling her desire to care for others.

“Lauren helped so many people in this career. That’s all she ever wanted to do, she was a person who cared more about others than herself in every aspect of life.” – April Lieschke

A Love Story Amidst Adversity

Lauren’s relationship with her husband, Chris, was a cornerstone of her life. After learning more about her prognosis, the couple decided not to delay their wedding, organizing the event in just two weeks. This decision reflected their deep love and commitment, a bond that provided strength during Lauren’s toughest moments.

April Lieschke emphasized the profound impact Lauren had on her family, stating, “Chris, Henry, and Mavis were pillars of strength and sources of complete happiness in the tough months that were to follow. She loved them so dearly as they still love her.”

Legacy of Love and Resilience

Lauren Hutchinson’s passing leaves a void that will be felt deeply by her family and community. Her sister April expressed the enduring nature of Lauren’s impact, saying, “She had a smile that would leave a mark on anyone, a kindness that no one could forget. But the love she left for home will be shining in the place that she once stood.”

The community of Walbundrie will continue to remember Lauren Hutchinson as a beacon of love and resilience, her story inspiring others to cherish every moment and live with purpose.
