A veteran firefighter tragically lost his life after being struck by a falling tree at the Bulahdelah fireground late on Sunday night, December 7. The 59-year-old, who had dedicated 25 years to the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), was working alongside NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) crews near Nerong, south of Bulahdelah on the NSW Mid North Coast.

Despite the immediate assistance from his colleagues and ambulance paramedics, the firefighter could not be saved. It is believed he suffered a cardiac arrest following the incident. Emergency services were called to Little Nungra Road, approximately 90 kilometers north of Newcastle, just before 11 p.m.

Community and Official Responses

The news of the firefighter’s passing has sent ripples of grief throughout the community and among his colleagues. Tributes have been pouring in since the confirmation of his death on Monday morning. Naomi Stephens, NPWS executive director of coastal operations, expressed the “deep, deep sadness” felt by the organization.

Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib also extended his condolences, acknowledging the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen firefighter. “Our emergency service workers and volunteers give so much to keep others safe, and we are devastated at the death of a firefighter who gave his life in service to our community,” he stated.

“My heart goes out to the loved ones and colleagues of the firefighter who has tragically lost their life in the Bulahdelah bushfire,” said Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. “This terrible news is a sombre reminder of the dangers that our emergency services personnel face to keep our homes and communities safe.”

Investigation Underway

Following the tragic incident, a crime scene was established, and SafeWork NSW has been notified. An investigation is currently underway, and a report will be prepared for the coroner. The firefighter’s family has requested privacy as they come to terms with their loss, choosing not to release his name publicly.

The NSW RFS Association expressed its sorrow, stating, “The worst fears of members have been realized with the death of one of our colleagues on the fireground near Bulahdelah yesterday. Our thoughts are with all those affected by yesterday’s tragedy, especially the family, friends, and NPWS colleagues of the fallen firefighter.”

This incident highlights the ongoing risks faced by emergency service personnel as they work to protect communities from the devastating impacts of bushfires.
