In a tragic incident on Thursday morning, a truck driver crashed into four cars on Banya Avenue, south-west of Caloundra. Emergency services suspect the driver may have suffered a medical episode, leading to the collision. The crash, which occurred around 11:45 am, resulted in severe injuries to a mother and her two young daughters, who were among the victims.
The mother, identified as Denyse, was traveling with her daughters, three-year-old Ineza and one-year-old Itahe, when their car was rear-ended and pinned against a construction site. Both girls sustained critical injuries and were initially treated at Sunshine Coast University Hospital before being flown to Queensland Children’s Hospital for further care.
Immediate Aftermath and Rescue Efforts
Queensland Ambulance Services spokesman Nick Haug reported that the girls were unconscious when extracted from their vehicle. Denyse, in her 30s, suffered head and chest injuries but was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition by Friday. Unfortunately, her daughters remained in critical condition, “fighting for their lives,” according to Acting Inspector Matthew Robertson, who noted there had been no change in their status since the previous night.
Newly released CCTV footage reveals the truck traveling at high speed before colliding with the first of four vehicles. It subsequently crashed into three more cars halted at an intersection, including the family’s car. Paramedics assessed a total of seven individuals, including the truck driver, with four others transported to Sunshine Coast University Hospital.
Community Response and Investigation
Witnesses, including a man involved in the crash and tradespeople from the nearby construction site, quickly rallied to assist the victims. “The people who witnessed that accident immediately jumped in to assist,” Robertson stated, commending the immediate response from bystanders.
The truck driver reportedly could not recall the incident, prompting police to investigate the possibility of a medical episode. Robertson confirmed that officers are examining various factors, including traffic light visibility and road conditions, to determine the cause of the crash. He clarified that no stolen vehicles were involved, emphasizing, “It was just people going about their normal business.”
Ongoing Investigation and Safety Concerns
This development follows a series of road safety concerns in the region, highlighting the need for comprehensive investigations into such incidents. According to sources, the police are conducting a thorough analysis to ensure all potential causes are explored, including the driver’s health and external conditions at the time of the crash.
Meanwhile, the community remains hopeful for the recovery of the young victims. The incident underscores the importance of road safety and the unpredictable nature of medical emergencies while driving.
“Nobody shied away from getting in, helping, providing assistance,” Robertson said, reflecting the community’s solidarity in the face of tragedy.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge drivers to remain vigilant and prioritize safety on the roads. The outcome of this inquiry may lead to further discussions on medical fitness standards for drivers, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future.
