top-video-games-of-2025-a-year-of-innovation-and-storytelling

This year has been a transformative one for the video games industry. With surging prices, the looming impact of artificial intelligence, significant job losses, and a consolidation of platforms, the world’s biggest entertainment category has felt less stable than ever. As we move towards a future dominated by streaming, subscriptions, and convergence, the landscape continues to shift dramatically.

Despite these challenges, 2025 has also been a year of incredible gaming achievements, showcasing an irrepressible appetite for creativity, innovation, and storytelling across experiences of all scales. This dynamic environment has led to a diverse array of games that have captivated audiences worldwide.

The Year’s Standout Games

In a year filled with so many gaming options, I’ve found myself gravitating towards games that offer exciting takes on comforting favorites, well-told stories, and above all, respect for my time. As a result, my top picks exclude some of the big online shooters and more involved titles like “Elden Ring: Nightreign” or “Hollow Knight: Silksong.” Here are my top 15 games from a very busy year:

The Drifter

Platform: PC

Combining contemporary storytelling with the creaky conventions of the point-and-click adventure genre, “The Drifter” is a piece of Australian sci-fi noir that spirals with surprise, suspense, and gut-punch revelations. The story follows Mick Carter, a haunted and houseless protagonist who stumbles into a conspiracy and a time loop that prevents his death. Presented in a stark pixelated style, the game balances fantastical terror with grounded tragedy, subverting expectations at every turn.

Ball x Pit

Platforms: Game Pass, PC, PS5, Switch, Xbox

If there’s one genre that received an unexpected makeover in 2025, it’s the Pong or Breakout-style paddle-ball action. “Ball x Pit” integrates contemporary design with a roguelite structure, transforming ball-bouncing into a strategic affair. As players wield the ball as a weapon, they face an onslaught of enemies, unlocking new capabilities and understanding over time.

Ghost of Yotei

Platform: PS5

Set in early 1600s Japan, “Ghost of Yotei” is an epic of interactive samurai cinema. Unlike typical big-budget adventures, its slower pace and focus on free exploration give it soul. The precise combat, personal revenge story, and beautifully detailed environments create an immersive experience that connects players to nature and the richly crafted world of Ezo.

Mario Kart World

Platform: Switch 2

Nintendo’s latest console debut didn’t feature a Mario platformer or Zelda adventure, but a kart racer. “Mario Kart World” places its 30 circuits within a massive explorable continent, offering a chaotic road trip feel with 24 competitors. The varied locations and genre-spanning soundtrack make it a standout in the franchise.

Dispatch

Platforms: PC, PS5

Produced by former Telltale team members, “Dispatch” is a gripping interactive TV show set in a world of superpowers. As a former hero managing reforming villains, players navigate a narrative filled with violence, sex, and swearing, making choices that shape the story in unexpected ways. The sharp writing and excellent voice performances elevate the experience.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

Platforms: Switch, Switch 2

“Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” continues the series’ focus on exploration and platforming. With updated visuals and a haunting soundtrack, players explore the world of Viewros, filled with diverse areas and the satisfaction of discovering new gear. The game maintains the series’ tradition of blending action with detective-like exploration.

Avowed

Platforms: Game Pass, PC, Xbox

Expanding the “Pillars of Eternity” setting, “Avowed” offers a compact yet potent RPG experience. With stunning scenery and a roster of companions, players experience a constant sense of progression, making decisions that shape their character’s place in the world. The game blends crunchy first-person combat with deep storytelling.

Split Fiction

Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch 2, Xbox

“Split Fiction” evolves co-operative gameplay with a blend of sci-fi and fantasy. Despite some cringy writing, the game offers innovative scenarios that balance the narrative. As amateur writers trapped in a virtual world, players collaborate and communicate to navigate new powers and concepts.

Sword of the Sea

Platforms: PC, PS5, PS Plus

From the team at Giant Squid, “Sword of the Sea” offers a meditative experience that bridges indie fans and art enthusiasts. With stunning visuals and a cinematic experience, players glide through fantasy scenery, forging a connection between their movements and the transforming world.

Absolum

Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch

For fans of side-scrolling brawlers, “Absolum” implements a roguelite structure, offering alternate paths and new characters with each run. With excellent hand-drawn art and an addictive looping structure, it’s a rewarding experience for both solo and co-op play.

Shinobi: Art of Vengeance

Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch, Xbox

“Shinobi: Art of Vengeance” transforms the classic Sega franchise into a gorgeous action platformer. With fast-paced swordplay and a sense of progression, players craft their own version of ninja master Joe Musashi, exploring distinct levels filled with nostalgic nods.

Octopath Traveler 0

Platforms: PC, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox

Square Enix’s “Octopath Traveler 0” continues the publisher’s tradition of turn-based RPGs with a single-point narrative and town-building gameplay. The game offers a sense of permanent progression and an intoxicating old-school Final Fantasy vibe.

South of Midnight

Platforms: Game Pass, PC, Xbox

“South of Midnight” blends magical realism with the rich folklore of the American south. As protagonist Hazel, players navigate a world filled with mythical creatures and human stories, creating a powerful and empathic journey. The faux-stop-motion visuals and phenomenal soundtrack enhance the experience.

Donkey Kong Bananza

Platform: Switch 2

“Donkey Kong Bananza” marks a stunning return for the iconic character. With kinetic energy and destructible landscapes, the game offers gratifying exploration and powerful transformations, making it one of the best 3D platformers in recent memory.

Hades 2

Platforms: PC, Switch, Switch 2

With its addictive combat, beautiful art, and engaging Greek god story, “Hades 2” is a masterful roguelite dungeon-crawler. Players navigate the underworld, supported by the Gods of Olympus, in a perpetual battle against Chronos, with permanent upgrades and evolving narratives.
