Former Labor strategist Tim Picton has died after spending more than three weeks in a critical condition following an alleged assault outside a Perth nightclub. Mr. Picton, aged 36, was a key figure in Western Australia’s political landscape, having led the campaign for WA Labor’s landslide victory in the 2021 state election. Most recently, he served as a director of strategy for the mining giant Mineral Resources.

The announcement of his death was confirmed by his family on Monday morning. Mr. Picton was the brother of South Australian Health Minister Chris Picton, adding a personal dimension to the public loss felt across the political and business communities.

Family’s Heartfelt Tribute

In a poignant statement, Mr. Picton’s family described him as a “deeply devoted father and loving husband, son, grandson, brother, and uncle.” They expressed their devastation at his passing, emphasizing his kindness, generosity, and humor.

“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Tim, who passed away earlier today surrounded by his family,” the family’s statement said. “His kindness, generosity and humour brought joy to our lives.”

Mr. Picton leaves behind a four-year-old daughter, Charlotte, whom the family described as “the love of his life.” They expressed heartbreak over the fact that Charlotte will grow up without her father but vowed to keep his memory alive for her.

Tributes from Political Leaders

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended his condolences, acknowledging Mr. Picton’s significant contributions to the Labor Party. “Tim should have had many more decades ahead of him. That he has been taken from the world so young is such a cruel tragedy,” the Prime Minister remarked.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas also paid tribute, highlighting Mr. Picton’s respect within the Labor movement nationally. “Chris loved his brother deeply. The bond they shared was evident to everyone who knew them,” he noted.

Former WA Premier Mark McGowan praised Mr. Picton’s intellect and work ethic, stating that his passing is a loss to both the state and the nation. “His intellect, capacity and work ethic were enormous,” McGowan said.

Legal Developments and Community Reactions

Tim Picton was found unresponsive in Perth’s Northbridge entertainment district on December 27. Police had responded to reports of a disturbance outside a licensed venue. Mr. Picton remained in a coma until his passing.

The alleged attacker, Brodie Jake Dewar, 20, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm. However, following Mr. Picton’s death, the charges are expected to be upgraded. At a previous court hearing, Dewar’s lawyer claimed that Dewar acted in self-defense, believing Mr. Picton was about to attack him.

The court heard the 20-year-old had allegedly knocked the man unconscious in Kalamunda, in the Perth Hills, days earlier on Christmas Day, and posted about it on social media.

Meanwhile, the community continues to grapple with the loss of a man described as having a “remarkable ability to grasp complex problems” and a “capacity for love.” Mineral Resources’ managing director Chris Ellison described Mr. Picton as an “exceptionally talented and dedicated leader” whose loss would be deeply felt.

Looking Ahead

As the legal proceedings continue, the focus remains on ensuring justice for Tim Picton and his family. The case has sparked a broader conversation about violence in nightlife districts and the need for increased safety measures.

The community, friends, and colleagues of Mr. Picton are left to honor his legacy and support his family, especially young Charlotte, as they navigate this difficult time. The impact of his work and the love he shared with those around him will continue to resonate, ensuring that his memory lives on.
