The Empire Theatre, a cornerstone of the performing arts in Toowoomba, is on the hunt for a new Head of Audio & Video. This permanent full-time position is critical in maintaining the theatre’s reputation for delivering high-quality audio and video services. The Empire, known for its iconic art deco architecture, is the largest regional performing arts precinct in the country. Owned by the Toowoomba Regional Council, it serves as a hub for creative arts development. The Head of Audio & Video will work closely with the Production Services Manager and other department heads to oversee the maintenance and operation of all audio and video systems, ensuring they meet industry standards.
Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
The Head of Audio & Video will lead the delivery of audio, video, and broadcast services across The Empire precinct. This includes maintaining all systems, acting as Sound Designer or Audio Engineer for major events, and managing video production requirements. The role also involves coordinating the technical aspects of productions, providing technical advice, and ensuring the safety and compliance of all operations.
Technical & Production Operations
- Lead audio and video services across all venues within The Empire.
- Maintain and document equipment in line with industry standards.
- Act as Sound Designer/Audio Engineer for large-scale productions.
- Oversee video, projection, vision mixing, and live streaming needs.
- Ensure efficient and safe technical operations during productions.
Additionally, the role involves providing technical advice to clients, managing pre- and post-production needs, and maintaining clean and safe technical work areas.
Production Support and Collaboration
Collaboration is key, as the Head of Audio & Video will work with visiting technicians and internal departments to ensure seamless event delivery. This includes providing professional advice on sound design, video production, and technical requirements to enhance community projects and productions.
Asset Management and Safety Compliance
The role also involves managing all audio and video equipment, overseeing inventory, and contributing to asset management planning. Safety is a top priority, with the Head of Audio & Video responsible for monitoring safety procedures and ensuring compliance with WHS requirements.
Team Leadership and Development
Leading a team is a significant part of the job. The Head of Audio & Video will supervise the Senior Technician – Audio and casual staff, assist with staff rostering, and deliver training to support The Empire’s commitment to developing technical skills in the region.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates should have tertiary qualifications in technical production or equivalent experience in the performing arts industry. At least five years of practical experience in a live theatre environment is required, along with demonstrated experience in leading technical teams and ensuring WHS compliance.
Technical and Interpersonal Skills
- Advanced knowledge of live sound reinforcement systems and digital mixing systems.
- Experience in managing audio and video networks and live entertainment sound design.
- Comprehensive understanding of backstage communications and video systems.
- Demonstrated ability to use computer-aided drawing software for technical design.
Interpersonal skills are also crucial, as the role requires effective communication and collaboration with a diverse range of stakeholders.
