Tesla has announced the opening of orders for its new six-seater Model Y L in Australia, a move that is set to shake up the electric vehicle market. The latest variant of the popular Model Y offers a remarkable 14 percent more range than any previous version, providing families with additional space in a three-row SUV configuration. Priced at $74,900 before on-road costs, the Model Y L is surprisingly affordable, positioning itself as the most cost-effective three-row electric SUV with more than five seats.

The introduction of the Model Y L marks a significant milestone as it becomes the first Tesla in Australia to feature Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology. This technology allows for a 3.3 kW discharge rate, enhancing the vehicle’s utility by enabling it to power external devices. Equipped with a large Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt (NMC) battery pack, the Model Y L boasts an impressive 681 km range on 19-inch wheels, surpassing the current Dual-Motor Long Range model by over 13 percent.

Advanced Performance and Safety Features

The Model Y L’s powertrain includes an all-wheel-drive setup capable of delivering up to 378 kW of power and 590 Nm of torque. This configuration allows the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just five seconds, reaching a top speed of 201 km/h. Safety remains a priority, with the vehicle earning a 5-star ANCAP rating ahead of its local release.

In addition to its performance capabilities, the Model Y L is equipped with Tesla’s premium audio system, featuring 18 speakers and a subwoofer. This setup surpasses the 15-speaker systems found in the Long Range and Performance variants, ensuring an immersive audio experience for passengers.

Customization and Interior Enhancements

Australian customers can choose from five exterior paint options and one interior trim:

  • Diamond Black – $1,500
  • Glacier Blue – $1,500
  • Stealth Grey – $1,900
  • Cosmic Silver – $2,600
  • Ultra Red – $2,600

Interior Trim: Zen Grey – $1,500

The Model Y L, now available for order on Tesla Australia’s configurator, is expected to begin customer deliveries in the second quarter of 2026. The vehicle was initially launched in China in August last year, where it received a warm reception from buyers seeking a spacious family electric SUV.

Innovative Seating and Space Utilization

The Model Y L introduces a new seating configuration that differs from the standard Model Y, which underwent a refresh earlier in 2025. The front seats feature adjustable headrests for enhanced comfort, while the second row includes two “captain’s chairs” with retractable armrests. These armrests can be controlled via the rear seat screen or a button on the seat cushion, offering unique functionality exclusive to the Model Y L.

The third row provides two additional seats with cup holders, ensuring reasonable space for passengers. Both the second and third-row seats can be folded down using buttons in the boot, resulting in over 2,530 liters of cargo space. This generous capacity is attributed to the vehicle’s extended wheelbase, which is 177 mm longer than the standard Model Y, bringing the total length to nearly five meters.

Looking Ahead

The Model Y L incorporates continuously variable dampers, similar to those found in the Model 3 and Model Y Performance variants, promising a smooth driving experience. As Tesla’s most spacious and longest-range SUV to date, the Model Y L is poised to compete with more expensive family electric SUVs in the market.

The automotive community eagerly anticipates testing the Model Y L on Australian roads in the coming months. This latest offering from Tesla not only expands the brand’s lineup but also reinforces its commitment to innovation and affordability in the electric vehicle sector.
