A Sydney man narrowly avoided injury when his home was struck by bullets during a series of reckless shootings in suburban areas. The incidents, which took place in the early hours of Friday, have left residents in fear, prompting police to call for an end to the violence.
Authorities report that three shots were fired from a small calibre pistol at a residence on Bluegum Avenue in Prestons at approximately 1 a.m. The assailants fled the scene in a white Mercedes. Shortly thereafter, another shooting occurred on Greenway Drive in West Hoxton, where a family was left terrified after three more shots were fired into their home.
Police Investigation and Community Impact
Police have confirmed that the occupants of both homes were not known to them, leading detectives to investigate the backgrounds of previous residents. The shootings are believed to be linked, and bear similarities to other recent incidents in Cabramatta and Green Valley, which involved firebombing of vehicles.
Superintendent Scott Tanner described the events as “absolutely reckless,” emphasizing the danger posed to innocent residents. “There’s nothing normal about this,” Tanner stated. “People should not be doing their business or whatever they’re doing at one o’clock in the morning and fear that somebody will come and attack their house.”
“Absolutely reckless” shootings have left Sydney residents in fear, says Superintendent Scott Tanner.
Police Response and Community Reactions
In response to the shootings, tactical police were deployed to the West Hoxton area on Friday morning. Officers conducted thorough searches for evidence, examining cars and bins in the vicinity. Superintendent Tanner noted that the family residing in the West Hoxton home, which includes two parents and their adult children, is struggling to comprehend the situation.
According to Tanner, the family had only recently moved into the home, leading police to engage with neighbors to gather information about the property’s history. The perpetrators of Thursday’s shootings remain at large, though police do not currently believe these are connected to Friday’s incidents.
Authorities Condemn Violence
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon condemned the recent spate of violence, labeling the four shootings over two days as “completely unacceptable.” Speaking to 2GB, Lanyon highlighted the disregard for community safety demonstrated by organized criminals.
“It really does demonstrate the disrespect and disregard that organized criminals have for the community and their safety,” Lanyon said.
Lanyon further expressed concern that some targeted homes may not have any association with organized crime, thereby increasing the risk to uninvolved residents.
Looking Forward: Community Safety and Police Efforts
As the investigation continues, police are urging anyone with information to come forward. The recent shootings have sparked renewed discussions about community safety and the measures needed to prevent further violence.
The incidents have also prompted calls for increased police presence in affected areas and more robust strategies to combat organized crime. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities.
As Sydney grapples with these unsettling events, the focus remains on ensuring the safety and security of all residents. The police are committed to resolving these cases and restoring peace to the community.
