Victoria Police has issued a stark warning about a new wave of tech-savvy car thefts sweeping across the state. The latest figures from the Crime Statistics Agency reveal a troubling rise in car thefts, with 33,212 vehicles stolen in the year leading up to September. Alarmingly, many of these thefts occurred without the use of traditional keys.
Police have identified a significant number of these vehicles—over 10,000—as being stolen using key cloning devices. These devices mimic or clone the vehicle’s key technology, effectively overriding the security systems. Last year alone, authorities seized 800 such devices.
“Our intelligence estimates as many as 30 cars are being stolen using key cloning technology in Victoria every day,” stated Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations Bob Hill. “Key cloning devices are showing up more and more frequently at search warrants and during intercepts of suspicious vehicles.”
Impact on Popular Car Models
The surge in thefts has notably impacted several popular car models. According to police data, Toyota Land Cruisers, Corollas, Hiluxs, and Rav 4s, along with Holden Commodores and Subaru Imprezas, are the most frequently targeted by tech-savvy thieves.
From 2022 to 2025, thefts of Subaru Imprezas increased by 14.4%, Toyota Rav 4s by 9.9%, and Toyota Land Cruisers by 9.5%. These statistics highlight a growing trend among criminals to exploit advanced technology to bypass traditional security measures.
Hotspots for Tech-Savvy Thefts
The areas most affected by these thefts include Melbourne, Dandenong, Tarneit, Narre Warren, St Albans, Craigieburn, Southbank, Reservoir, Truganina, and Epping. These suburbs have become hotspots for criminals employing key cloning technology.
Police are actively collaborating with car manufacturers to address this issue. A common vulnerability appears to be the vehicles’ push-to-start ignition systems, which are particularly susceptible to key cloning attacks.
Efforts to Combat the Rising Threat
In response to the escalating threat, Victoria Police have ramped up efforts to arrest perpetrators and recover stolen vehicles. Last year, they successfully returned 80% of stolen cars to their rightful owners. However, authorities stress the importance of preventative measures by car owners.
Deputy Commissioner Hill advises, “The best thing you can do is park your car off the street and install anti-theft devices, such as OBD port locks, to reduce your chances of falling victim.”
Looking Ahead: Preventative Measures and Community Involvement
The rise in tech-savvy car thefts underscores the need for both technological advancements in vehicle security and increased public awareness. As criminals become more sophisticated, car owners are urged to adopt proactive measures to safeguard their vehicles.
Experts suggest that manufacturers should enhance the security features of vehicles, particularly focusing on vulnerabilities in keyless entry systems. Meanwhile, community involvement and vigilance can play a crucial role in deterring thefts and assisting law enforcement efforts.
As the fight against car theft continues, Victoria Police remain committed to curbing this growing trend and ensuring the safety of the community. The collaboration between law enforcement, car manufacturers, and the public will be pivotal in addressing the challenges posed by tech-savvy criminals.
