A new teaser for the upcoming Supergirl movie has officially introduced Milly Alcock as the iconic character Kara Zor-El. The footage, part of James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe, offers fans their first glimpse of the Kryptonian hero. With the full trailer set to release this week, anticipation for the film’s 2026 debut continues to build.

The teaser opens with a striking image of Kara Zor-El seated alone at a desolate station, reminiscent of a bus stop in the middle of nowhere. Dressed in sunglasses and a trench coat, Kara’s solitude is abruptly interrupted by the dramatic descent of a spaceship, stirring up dust and wind. This brief yet impactful scene not only introduces audiences to Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl but also sets a new, grittier tone for the character, distinct from her famous cousin, Superman.

Reimagining Supergirl for a New Era

This development marks Kara’s second appearance in a theatrical release since the 1984 Supergirl film, which was originally conceived as a spin-off from the Christopher Reeve Superman series. Despite its ambitious beginnings, the 1984 film was largely viewed as a commercial failure. Kara’s brief return in CG form during The Flash (2023), alongside Reeve’s Superman, served as a nostalgic nod to her past.

However, the upcoming film, directed by Craig Gillespie and scripted by Ana Nogueira, aims to wipe the slate clean, reintroducing Kara as part of Gunn’s updated DC continuity. The story follows Kara’s cosmic journey with her companion Krypto to celebrate her 21st birthday, a narrative that promises both adventure and personal growth.

Star-Studded Cast and Creative Team

The film boasts an impressive cast, including Milly Alcock as Kara, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills. Jason Momoa takes on the role of Lobo, while David Krumholtz appears as Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Alura In-Ze, and Ferdinand Kingsley as Elias Knoll.

According to James Gunn, the film will explore Kara’s journey of self-discovery and responsibility. Gunn humorously noted a cameo connection to Superman’s story involving Krypto, where Superman was left to care for the dog.

“She’s off being irresponsible… then, when you find out at the end, it’s not even his dog; she just left it with him,”

Gunn shared with Entertainment Weekly.

Setting the Stage for the Future of DCU

The announcement of the teaser comes at a time when the DC Universe is undergoing significant transformations under Gunn’s leadership. The film’s fresh take on Supergirl is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future narrative arcs within the DCU.

As the full trailer release approaches, fans and critics alike are eager to see how this new iteration of Supergirl will resonate with audiences. The film’s premiere, scheduled for June 26, 2026, is poised to be a major cinematic event, potentially redefining the superhero genre.

With a blend of new storytelling, a talented cast, and a visionary director, Supergirl is set to soar to new heights, offering a fresh perspective on a beloved character. As anticipation builds, the film promises to deliver a compelling narrative that honors the legacy of Supergirl while charting a bold new course.
