Sunshine Coast Airport has unveiled ambitious plans for a $170 million terminal redevelopment, marking a significant milestone in its expansion efforts. The project aims to nearly double the terminal’s size, increase departure gates from five to seven, and triple the departure lounge space. This extensive overhaul is designed to meet future demand, improve operational efficiency, and enhance the travel experience for both locals and visitors.
Construction company McNab has been appointed as the builder, with global architectural firm Populous | Fentress Studios leading the design and Planned Performance managing the project. Sunshine Coast Airport CEO Chris Mills emphasized the airport’s commitment to delivering world-class outcomes for the region, stating, “The Terminal Redevelopment Project is a major milestone in the airport’s expansion with approximately $170 million being invested to support the future of our airport and our region.”
Community-Centric Design and Economic Impact
The redevelopment is not just about expansion but also about community involvement and economic growth. According to Mills, the project will support local jobs, boost the economy, and strengthen the Sunshine Coast’s role as a tourism and business gateway. “Importantly, this project has been shaped by community input, so the terminal reflects local needs and expectations with their insights directly influencing key design features, amenities, and the overall experience,” he said.
The new terminal will incorporate expanded retail and food offerings, cutting-edge technology for check-in and security, and sustainable design features. Sunshine Coast Airport chair David Ryan expressed his enthusiasm for the project, highlighting McNab’s strong reputation for delivering high-quality projects in the region.
Construction and Design Details
McNab CEO Kunjan Ganatra shared his pride in contributing to such a transformational project, noting that around 2000 people will work on it, with 90 percent of trades and subcontractors sourced locally. “Together we will deliver a terminal our community can be proud of – one that combines smart design, sustainability, and a strong sense of place,” he said.
Populous | Fentress Studios Asia Pacific Head of Aviation Matt Findlay explained that the terminal design would reflect the unique character of the Sunshine Coast while providing a seamless passenger experience. “Our vision for the terminal is to create a space that celebrates the Sunshine Coast’s natural beauty and lifestyle while providing travellers with a modern, efficient, and welcoming gateway,” he noted.
By 2030, Sunshine Coast Airport is forecast to welcome 2.4 million passengers annually. The terminal’s footprint will almost double, from 6100sqm to 11,750sqm. The domestic departure lounge will increase threefold, from 1250sqm to 3750sqm, and departure gates will see a 40% boost in capacity.
Sustainability and Future Growth
Sustainability is at the heart of the redevelopment, with features such as mass timber, rainwater harvesting, expanded solar panels, and energy-efficient HVAC systems. The airport’s growth trajectory is impressive; it connects to major cities like Adelaide, Auckland, Cairns, Melbourne, and Sydney, supported by airlines including Air New Zealand, Alliance, Jetstar, Qantas, and Virgin Australia.
Declared a Priority Development Area in 2023, the airport is poised to significantly impact the local economy. By 2040, it is estimated to contribute $460 million to Australia’s GDP and support over 2000 jobs. Sunshine Coast Airport Pty Ltd operates the airport under a 99-year lease from Sunshine Coast Council, which began in 2017.
Looking Ahead
The Terminal Redevelopment Project will be delivered in stages to minimize disruption and ensure continuity of operations. The first stage is already underway, with the new outbound checked baggage handling facility scheduled for completion in early 2026 and the full domestic terminal expansion expected by 2027.
This redevelopment represents a significant investment in the region’s future, promising to enhance the travel experience while supporting economic growth and sustainability. As the Sunshine Coast Airport continues to expand its reach and capabilities, it stands as a testament to the region’s vibrant future as a key tourism and business hub.
