At 24 years old, Ernesto Diaz from West Melbourne seemed to have his entire life ahead of him. Known for his lively spirit and love for social gatherings, Ernesto was enjoying a Valentine’s Day event in 2007 when a sudden stroke nearly ended his life. His survival and recovery are nothing short of miraculous.
Ernesto underwent a grueling 13-hour surgery, followed by two weeks in intensive care. Reflecting on his lifestyle at the time, Ernesto admits, “Back then, I did feel like a little bit untouchable. I was smoking and drinking, and I’m sure that caused the stroke.”
He considers himself fortunate that the stroke occurred in the presence of others. “I had weakness in my right arm, a facial droop, and slurred speech. If I was alone, I don’t believe I would still be here today,” Ernesto shared.
From Near-Death to New Beginnings
Now 43, Ernesto feels healthier than ever. This Valentine’s Day, he plans to celebrate with his fiancé and their four-year-old son. “I want to make sure I can keep up with my little one and be here for his future. I’m so grateful to be alive today,” he expressed with gratitude.
Ernesto attributes his survival to the swift actions of his friends and family, who recognized the signs of a stroke and acted quickly. “I know I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for Dr. Laidlaw and the team at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. I like to think they’ve given me a whole new life and an extra 20 years with my family,” he said.
The Importance of Recognizing Stroke Symptoms
According to the Stroke Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Lisa Murphy, around 80 percent of strokes can be prevented. “If you’re a smoker, you’re twice as likely to experience a stroke, and the more you smoke, the greater your risk,” Dr. Murphy explained.
“When a stroke strikes, it kills up to 1.9 million brain cells per minute. A stroke is always a medical emergency. The longer a stroke remains untreated, the greater the chance of stroke-related brain damage.”
Dr. Murphy emphasizes the importance of the F.A.S.T. message in recognizing stroke symptoms:
- Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
- Arms – Can they lift both arms?
- Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
- Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call straight away.
A Second Chance at Life
Ernesto’s story is a powerful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of health awareness. His journey from a carefree young man to a devoted father and partner underscores the impact of lifestyle choices on health.
As he looks to the future, Ernesto is committed to maintaining his health for his family. His experience serves as an inspiration for others to recognize the signs of a stroke and to act quickly. “I’m living proof that with the right help, you can overcome even the most daunting challenges,” Ernesto concluded.
Meanwhile, health professionals continue to advocate for greater awareness and prevention strategies to reduce the incidence of strokes. The Stroke Foundation and medical experts like Dr. Murphy are at the forefront of this mission, emphasizing education and proactive health measures.
Ernesto’s journey is a testament to resilience and the power of timely medical intervention. As he celebrates life with his loved ones, his story serves as a beacon of hope and a call to action for stroke awareness and prevention.
