Earlier this year, the makers of King sent fans into a frenzy by announcing the film’s release date as December 24, 2026, positioning it as a major Christmas release. The announcement instantly heightened excitement, not just because of the festive slot, but also because it marks Shah Rukh Khan’s return to the big screen after a three-year gap following his blockbuster run in 2023.

Now, filmmaker Siddharth Anand has addressed the inevitable box-office expectations that come with directing a megastar like SRK. Speaking to Variety India, Anand made it clear that while expectations are unavoidable, creative compromise is not an option.

“I wouldn’t say there’s pressure, but I would say there are expectations. And that comes when you work with a megastar like SRK. So, I’m aware of those expectations. But if I start pandering to them, then it’s a mistake; I’ll go wrong in my filmmaking. Because if there were a formula for catering, then everyone would be making blockbusters,”

the filmmaker said.

The Dangers of Chasing Formulas

Drawing from his experience with Pathaan, Anand explained why chasing numbers or formulas can be creatively dangerous. Siddharth added,

“If you start following a success formula, you begin second-guessing what the audience will like. And that will kill you as a filmmaker. We never made Pathaan with that intention or with the dream of achieving the numbers it eventually did. And I think that’s where the magic lies.”

The filmmaker emphasized that King is being approached with the mindset of starting afresh.

“When you start working only with that belief, that is the downfall. We are working hard on King as if it were our first film. We need to pass the test with the audience again. We are working with that intention. We are aware of expectations, but we don’t succumb to the pressure,”

he shared.

A Milestone Collaboration

King is particularly significant as it marks the first onscreen collaboration between Shah Rukh Khan and his daughter Suhana Khan, who makes her theatrical debut with the film. Written by Sujoy Ghosh, the action thriller is produced by Gauri Khan, Siddharth Anand, and Mamta Anand under Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures.

The film boasts an ensemble cast featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Abhishek Bachchan in lead roles, with Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Arshad Warsi, Rani Mukerji, Jaideep Ahlawat, Abhay Verma, Raghav Juyal, and Karanvir Malhotra in supporting parts.

Anticipation Builds for 2026 Release

With its star power, ambitious scale, and a festive release date locked in, King is already one of the most anticipated Hindi films of 2026. This development follows a trend in Bollywood where films with significant star presence and holiday releases tend to draw massive box-office numbers.

According to industry experts, the combination of Shah Rukh Khan’s return, the unique father-daughter collaboration, and the holiday release could position King as a potential blockbuster. However, Siddharth Anand’s commitment to creative integrity over formulaic success could set a new standard in the industry.

As the release date approaches, fans and critics alike will be watching closely to see if King lives up to its monumental expectations, not just in terms of box-office numbers, but also in delivering a fresh cinematic experience.
