Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) Chairman Peter V’landys AM led the tributes, highlighting Backo’s significant contributions to the sport during his illustrious career.
Backo’s career spanned from 1983 to 1990, during which he played 116 matches for the Canberra Raiders and 20 games for the Brisbane Broncos. His prowess on the field was further demonstrated through his participation in seven State of Origin matches for Queensland and six Test matches for Australia.
“Sam was as tough as they come, a larger-than-life character who was as recognisable as he was resilient,” said V’landys. “Through a successful career with the Canberra Raiders, Brisbane Broncos, not to mention Queensland and Australia, he was a one-of-a-kind footballer.”
A Career Marked by Milestones
Backo’s career was punctuated by remarkable achievements. In 1988, he famously scored tries in all three Ashes Tests against Great Britain, a feat that remains etched in the annals of rugby league history. His ability to perform under pressure and his unique playing style earned him a place in the Indigenous Team of the Century, underscoring his impact on the sport and his community.

Legacy Beyond the Field
Backo’s influence extended beyond the rugby field. He was a passionate advocate for Indigenous health and welfare, dedicating much of his time to community initiatives. His commitment to these causes was as robust as his performance on the field, making him a respected figure both in and out of the sporting arena.
“A member of the Indigenous Team of the Century, Sam was also a generous and selfless man who was passionate about Indigenous health and advocacy away from the field,” V’landys added.
