Two Richmond veterans are set to make a significant impact as they return to the field for Saturday afternoon’s clash against the Gold Coast Suns at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Defender Nick Vlastuin and midfielder Dion Prestia have been named in the line-up, marking their comeback from pre-season injuries and rehabilitation programs.

Joining them are Mykelti Lefau and Tom Brown, both poised to make their first appearances of the 2026 AFL season. Lefau, who will add much-needed strength to the Richmond line-up, is playing just his second AFL game since 2024. Prestia, overcoming a pre-season hamstring injury, is eager to make his season debut.

Key Inclusions and Strategic Adjustments

Tom Brown’s selection follows a strong performance across half-back against Carlton in last week’s VFL practice match. Meanwhile, Vlastuin returns to the team after the club opted for caution in managing his fitness last week.

However, the team will be without Rhyan Mansell due to a wrist injury, Jonty Faull who is suspended, and key position players Josh Gibcus and Campbell Gray, both omitted from the line-up. Richmond Executive General Manager of Football Performance, Tim Livingstone, emphasized the importance of competition for spots, stating,

“We are excited about the competition for spots, and the pressure on selection. Our backline is particularly healthy.”

Coaching Insights and Tactical Considerations

Senior coach Adem Yze elaborated on Campbell Gray’s recent role as a ruck/forward, where he played limited game time last week. Yze explained,

“Campbell Gray trained as a defender all pre-season, and we have just thrown him in there for the last couple of weeks to help ‘Nank’ due to the unavailability of Samson Ryan and Tom Sims, both injured, and Mykelti Lefau, who was suspended.”

Yze highlighted that the team would reassess their strategies post-training, indicating that Gray’s role was a temporary adjustment.

Richmond’s Line-Up for the MCG Showdown

The defensive line-up features Vlastuin alongside Noah Balta, Ben Miller, Nathan Broad, Sam Banks, and Jayden Short. The centreline includes Hugo Ralphsmith, Jack Ross, and Kane McAuliffe, with skipper Toby Nankervis taking his spot in the ruck, supported by followers Tim Taranto and Jacob Hopper.

The forward line comprises Seth Campbell, Prestia, Maurice Rioli, Sam Lalor, Tom Lynch, and Harry Armstrong. On the interchange bench are Lefau, James Trezise, Steely Green, Brown, and Sam Grlj, while Gray, Tyler Sonsie, and Zane Peucker are listed as emergencies.
