Russian President Vladimir Putin, on Wednesday, extended his congratulations to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the accomplished touchdown of the Indian lunar mission at the south pole of the Moon.
In a significant achievement earlier on Wednesday (August 23), India achieved a historic milestone by becoming the inaugural nation to effectively execute a lunar landing. The event involved the successful placement of a spacecraft, the Chandrayaan-3 module, equipped with a lunar rover, onto the Moon’s South Pole. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) broadcasted footage of this remarkable accomplishment.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the successful landing of the Indian space station Chandrayaan-3 on the Moon near its south pole,” the statement by the Kremlin said.
The successful landing of the Indian space station is a big step in the exploration of outer space and demonstrates the impressive scientific and technological progress made by the country, Putin added.
India’s successful landing comes just days after Russia’s Luna-25, which was aiming for the same lunar region, spun into an uncontrolled orbit and crashed. It would have been the first successful Russian lunar landing after a gap of 47 years. Russia’s head of the state-controlled space corporation Roscosmos attributed the failure to the lack of expertise due to the long break in lunar research that followed the last Soviet mission to the moon in 1976.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also congratulated India’s External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar on the successful moon landing at the BRICS Summit currently underway in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The US & Japan also congratulate India
“Congratulations to @ISRO and the people of India for the Chandrayaan-3’s historic landing on the South Pole of the Moon. We look forward to deepening our partnership with India on space exploration in the years ahead,” tweeted United States’ National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
