When the North Queensland Cowboys were eliminated by the Cronulla Sharks in a semi-final last year, it marked the end of what many fans viewed as a disappointing 2024 campaign. Despite a victory over the Knights in an elimination final, the Cowboys’ season was marred by inconsistency and missed opportunities, leaving supporters and analysts alike questioning the team’s direction.

The Cowboys, led by coach Todd Payten, had another opportunity to prove their mettle against Cronulla. However, they found themselves trailing 24-0 at halftime at Allianz Stadium, ultimately succumbing to a 26-18 defeat. This lackluster performance encapsulated a season that had promised much but delivered little, prompting a period of reflection and reassessment over the off-season.

Defensive Woes and Departures

Despite the departure of key players such as Val Holmes, Kyle Feldt, and Kulikefu Finefeuaki, the Cowboys entered the 2025 season with a roster considered one of the most talented in the NRL. Historically, the team has been a strong contender with numerous Origin representatives, but this year has seen a dramatic regression.

Defensive frailties have plagued the Cowboys since 2022, when their league-leading defense propelled them to a preliminary final. However, this season has seen a stark decline in their defensive capabilities. Through 20 games, the Cowboys have managed only seven wins, conceding a staggering 595 points, averaging nearly 30 points per game.

“It doesn’t happen very often in the NRL where a team makes it obvious that they don’t want to be here, but that is the Cowboys this afternoon,” remarked rugby league great Greg Alexander.

Mounting Pressure on Todd Payten

As the Cowboys continue to struggle, the spotlight has turned to coach Todd Payten. His job security is increasingly in question, with veteran journalist Phil Rothfield highlighting the team’s grim form over the past three months. During this period, the Cowboys have secured just three victories, all against lower-ranked teams such as the Titans, Dragons, and Tigers.

“Their for and against is -177, which is the second worst in the competition behind Souths,” Rothfield stated. “They are way below expectations that their management, their board, their fans, and their stakeholders have, so pressure is well and truly building on Todd Payten.”

The Cowboys’ current standing behind the Tigers and Dragons on the ladder, despite having a roster with far greater potential, has only intensified scrutiny on Payten and his coaching staff. The absence of major injuries further exacerbates the situation, as the team has failed to capitalize on its relatively healthy lineup.

Looking Ahead: A Glimmer of Hope?

With only four games remaining in the season, the Cowboys are left with a slim chance of salvaging their campaign. A late surge could provide the momentum needed to enter the off-season on a positive note, potentially setting the stage for a reset and renewed focus next year.

While the current outlook appears bleak, the Cowboys’ management and fans can only hope for a turnaround that aligns with the team’s historical resilience and competitive spirit. As the season draws to a close, the pressure on Todd Payten and his squad will only intensify, with the future of the club hanging in the balance.
