The Sharks have honoured their legendary former coach Ian McIntosh by naming the main entry gate to Kings Park stadium in his honour.

“Today we had the privilege of honouring the legendary Ian McIntosh who has given so much to Sharks rugby as we named the entry gate to our stadium in his honour,” the Sharks posted on Wednesday.

McIntosh was the Sharks head coach from the late 1980s until the late 1990s. He is most famous for masterminding Natal’s first ever Currie Cup title in 1990 when they stunned Northern Transvaal (Bulls) 18-12 in the final in Pretoria.

“It has been 30 years since Natal’s inaugural Currie Cup win. Today we salute Mr Ian McIntosh by naming our main entry gate to the stadium in his honour. This is just recognition for a coach, who has made an invaluable contribution to Sharks and South African rugby,” the Sharks added.

Natal also won the Currie Cup in 1992 and this paved the way for McIntosh to become Springbok head coach in 1993. He was sacked after a 2-0 series loss in New Zealand in 1994.

He then returned to coach the Sharks and won two more Currie Cup titles in 1995 and 1996.

McIntosh grew up in Bulawayo in Zimbabwe and first made his mark as coach of their national side.
