New Zealand police have unveiled new CCTV footage believed to capture fugitive Tom Phillips and one of his children during a break-in at a store in Piopio, a location previously targeted by Phillips in 2023. This development marks a significant moment in the ongoing search for Phillips, who vanished into the rugged wilderness of Waikato with his three children just before Christmas 2021.
The children, Ember, now 9, Maverick, 10, and Jayda, 12, were taken by their father following a domestic dispute. Phillips does not have legal custody of the children, and their disappearance has sparked a nationwide search that has yet to yield results. Despite several reported sightings, the family has remained elusive.
Details of the Recent Break-In
On Friday, police released footage of an alleged break-in at a Piopio business early Wednesday morning. The footage shows a man and child, faces covered, using a quad bike to approach the store. Police believe these individuals are Phillips and one of his children. Detective Senior Sergeant Andy Saunders reported that the pair appeared to conduct “reconnaissance” and used a grinder to gain entry, allegedly stealing various grocery items.
“He certainly appears very comfortable to just come all the way to Piopio and commit a burglary,” Detective Senior Sergeant Saunders said. “It certainly appears they’re looking at the cameras, but as you’ll see, they’re covered up.”
Possible Motives and Investigative Angles
The incident has raised questions about Phillips’ current situation. Detective Senior Sergeant Saunders suggested the burglary might indicate a “falling out” with any potential allies who have been assisting him. This theory is part of the broader investigation into Phillips’ activities and whereabouts.
“Does this mean he’s potentially had a falling out with who’s helping him, or he’s just that brazen and confident that he’s quite happy to come out and commit a burglary?” Saunders pondered.
Phillips’ sister, Rozzi Phillips, recently spoke out about the family’s ordeal, sharing a letter from their mother, Julia, expressing the emotional toll of the ongoing situation.
“It hurts every time I see photos of the children and of you, and see some of your stuff that is still here, thinking what could have been if you had not gone away,” Julia wrote. “Jayda, Maverick, Ember, I love you so much and really miss being part of your lives. Every day I wake up, and hope that today will be the day that you will come home.”
Law Enforcement’s Approach and Challenges
Despite the challenges, police remain focused on the safety of the children. Detective Senior Sergeant Saunders emphasized that negotiations with Phillips are still an option, but the primary concern is ensuring the children’s well-being. Consequently, the idea of involving the Special Air Service (SAS) has been dismissed.
Phillips is already facing multiple charges, including aggravated robbery, aggravated wounding, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The police are cautious in their search efforts due to the potential risk Phillips poses.
“In terms of searching specific areas, we do have concerns around the risk Tom poses, so we’re very careful in terms of searching,” Saunders explained.
Looking Ahead
The release of the CCTV footage represents a critical step in the ongoing investigation. As authorities continue their search, the public remains hopeful for a resolution that ensures the safety of Phillips’ children. The case highlights the complexities and emotional challenges involved in such family disputes, drawing attention to the broader issues of custody and parental rights.
The New Zealand police urge anyone with information on Phillips’ whereabouts to come forward, emphasizing the importance of community involvement in resolving this high-profile case.
