Sick and tired of slow internet? You’re not alone. Almost four in five West Australians report being negatively impacted by inadequate speeds. However, a massive network upgrade set to sweep the nation aims to change that. Starting September 14, NBN will partner with national phone and internet providers to launch their latest upgrade, Accelerate Great, offering Australians a historic boost in internet speeds without additional costs.

Aussies on eligible internet or phone plans with download speeds of 100Mbps or higher will automatically have their speeds boosted through their provider. NBN estimates that some plans will accelerate to five times their current speed, reaching up to 500Mbps. The company has confirmed that their Home Fast, Home Superfast, and Home Ultrafast plans will all experience more than double their current speeds.

New Plans and Unprecedented Speeds

The roll-out is not only limited to upgrading existing broadband packages. Two brand-new plans, touted to be “twice as fast as the fastest residential plan,” will also be launched, offering download speeds of 2000Mbps. This development represents a significant leap forward in the digital capabilities available to Australian households and businesses.

With Western Australia containing more than a million premises eligible for the highest speeds, NBN spokesperson Jane McNamara highlighted the transformative potential of the upgrade. “The new speeds are a monumental leap forward for the NBN network and Australia as a whole,” she told PerthNow. “They mean we can support Australian homes and businesses to stay ahead of the curve and handle the data demands of today and in the future.”

The Growing Need for Speed

Why is there such an urgent need for boosted speeds? According to telecommunication researcher Omdia, Australians spend on average more than six and a half hours a day online, engaging in streaming and gaming more than ever before. The number of internet-connected devices per household has also risen dramatically, from two devices in 2015 to 25 currently.

61% of WA residents say faster internet would improve their time at home, making the upgrade timely and necessary.

Ms. McNamara outlined three easy steps for West Australians to follow to take full advantage of the accelerated speeds: get ready, get set, and get great. “Enhanced speed plans are only available via Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) technology, so check the NBN website to confirm your eligibility,” she advised.

Preparing for the Upgrade

To ensure a seamless transition to higher speeds, Ms. McNamara recommended that users contact their internet or phone provider to take up an eligible plan. Additionally, she emphasized the importance of ensuring that home internet equipment, such as Wi-Fi routers, is up to date and optimally positioned to handle the new speeds.

Australians are encouraged to check the NBN website or contact their internet provider directly for further information about the roll-out and how it will impact their service. The move represents a significant step forward in addressing the growing digital demands of Australian households and businesses.

As the nation prepares for this digital transformation, the implications of faster internet speeds are vast, promising enhanced productivity, better entertainment experiences, and a more connected society. The Accelerate Great plan is not just an upgrade; it’s a glimpse into the future of Australia’s digital landscape.
