The Nambucca Valley Bridge Club (NVBC) has demonstrated that their passion for the card game can translate into meaningful community support. Recently, the club donated $1,040 to the Nambucca Valley Community Church’s FoodHub, located at 2 Ridge Street, Nambucca Heads. This contribution underscores the club’s commitment to aiding local initiatives that support those in need.

Since its inception in 2012, the FoodHub has been a cornerstone of the Nambucca community, providing discounted and often free food to pensioners and healthcare card holders facing financial challenges. The donation from the NVBC will bolster the FoodHub’s efforts to continue offering these essential services.

A Tradition of Giving Back

Each year, the NVBC organizes a charity day, dedicating the proceeds from table fees and a trading table to a local organization. This year, the club’s members unanimously decided to support the FoodHub. Carol McKee, a representative of the NVBC, expressed the club’s motivation behind the donation, stating, “We wanted them to know how much the community values what they do.”

The club’s decision highlights the vital role that the FoodHub plays in the community. “The FoodHub is making a difference in people’s lives through the work done by their great volunteers, and we’re proud to help,” McKee added.

Bridge Club: More Than Just a Game

With a membership of 90, the NVBC is a robust presence in the region, yet Carol McKee believes there is always room for growth. “We’d love to see more people come along and get involved in the game,” she said. Bridge, a card game with roots tracing back to the 16th-century game of whist, has evolved into the modern version of contract bridge, which took shape in the 1920s and remains popular worldwide.

Members of the NVBC describe bridge as having an almost addictive quality, attributing its appeal to the mental health benefits associated with the game. Engaging in bridge challenges the mind, offering both cognitive stimulation and social interaction, which are crucial for mental well-being.

“The mental health benefits of using your mind to play the game is one aspect that makes it so appealing,” members of the NVBC told NOTA.

Community Impact and Future Engagement

The NVBC plays six days a week and is always open to newcomers. The club’s efforts to support the FoodHub reflect a broader trend of community organizations leveraging their activities to benefit local causes. Such initiatives not only provide immediate financial support but also raise awareness about the needs within the community.

As the NVBC continues to grow, it remains committed to fostering a sense of community both within and outside the club. For those interested in joining or learning more about the club, additional information can be found on their website: www.bridgewebs.com/nambucca/home.html.

Through their annual charity day and ongoing community engagement, the Nambucca Valley Bridge Club exemplifies how a shared love for a game can make a tangible impact on the lives of others.
