Nathan Jermyn, a native of Biloxi, Mississippi, has transitioned from childhood field trips to NASA’s Stennis Space Center to a pivotal role as an attorney-advisor supporting NASA operations. His journey, however, was interrupted by a call to serve with the Mississippi Army National Guard, a testament to his dual commitment to both national service and space exploration.

In the summer of 2023, Jermyn began his role at NASA with a one-day orientation, preparing to support the legal frameworks at NASA’s Stennis Space Center and the NASA Shared Services Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. Just a week later, he was deployed for nearly six months to provide military legal counsel in support of Operation Spartan Shield and Operation Inherent Resolve.

Returning to NASA: Legal Expertise in Action

Upon his return in January 2024, Jermyn fully embraced his responsibilities within NASA’s Office of the General Counsel. As part of the contract and procurement practice group, he plays a crucial role in ensuring that taxpayer funds are utilized responsibly, a task that involves navigating complex legal landscapes.

Jermyn also contributes to NASA’s Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) team, providing legal reviews and advice to foster a transparent and effective knowledge-sharing environment. He finds the intricate process of piecing together the big picture particularly rewarding.

“Even though I have been working here for two years, sometimes it does not feel real,” Jermyn shared, reflecting on his journey.

A Journey from Criminal Law to Space Exploration

Before joining NASA, Jermyn’s path included a bachelor’s degree in business administration from The University of Southern Mississippi and a law degree from Mississippi College School of Law. Initially, he practiced criminal law in Gulfport, Mississippi, before transitioning to government contract law at NASA.

Jermyn credits his team at NASA for their support and guidance, which have been instrumental in his adaptation to the complexities of his current role. He emphasizes the importance of teamwork and continuous learning in navigating the challenges of government contract law.

“Having a team that supports you and teaches you every day really expedites the learning process,” he noted. “Our team puts a heavy emphasis on learning, development, and teamwork.”

The Future of Space Exploration: Artemis and Beyond

Looking ahead, Jermyn is particularly excited about NASA’s Artemis campaign, which aims to explore the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to lay the groundwork for the first crewed missions to Mars. Artemis II is scheduled for 2026, marking a significant milestone in humanity’s quest to explore the cosmos.

“I wholeheartedly believe humanity is destined for the stars and NASA is in prime position to lead that charge,” Jermyn expressed, highlighting his enthusiasm for the agency’s future missions.

Jermyn’s story is a testament to the power of dedication and the seamless integration of military service and civilian expertise in advancing national and global objectives. As NASA continues to push the boundaries of space exploration, individuals like Jermyn play a crucial role in ensuring that these endeavors are grounded in sound legal and ethical frameworks.
