In a strategic unveiling at the launch of the all-electric GLC with EQ Technology mid-size SUV, Mercedes-Benz offered a tantalizing glimpse of its forthcoming C-Class EV. This new model, following the nomenclature of recent Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles, will be branded as the C-Class with EQ Technology.

The teaser image reveals a C-Class EQ with a rounded silhouette, maintaining traditional sedan proportions. This design choice marks a departure from the EQE and EQS models, which featured more extended A- and D-pillars. The C-Class EQ’s distinctive shape is complemented by a tall, upright grille, known as the ‘Iconic Grille,’ which is available with illumination that encompasses the frame, the three-pointed star logo, and the grille slats themselves.

Design Innovations and Features

The C-Class EQ’s grille is set to feature four slats, in contrast to the GLC EQ’s three, and will include the signature three-pointed star headlight graphic. The side profile of the vehicle reveals a unique design element: a separate window behind the rear doors, a feature traditionally reserved for luxury Maybach and Pullman models, as well as some China-specific long-wheelbase variants.

Underpinning the C-Class EQ is the new MB.EA electric vehicle platform, which debuted with the GLC EQ. This platform represents a significant departure from the petrol and diesel versions of the GLC and C-Class, indicating a fresh approach to electric mobility by Mercedes-Benz.

While specific battery capacities and motor outputs for the C-Class EQ have not been disclosed, Mercedes-Benz has indicated that the longest-range variant will achieve up to 800 kilometers on a single charge. The GLC400 4Matic EQ, the most powerful version of the GLC EQ, features a 360kW dual-motor all-wheel drive system, a two-speed gearbox for the rear axle, a 94kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery, and a WLTP range of 713 kilometers.

More affordable versions of the C-Class EQ are expected to offer a single-motor rear-wheel drivetrain with a smaller lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The MB.EA platform’s 800V electrical architecture supports DC fast-charging at up to 330kW, promising quick recharging times.

Technological Advancements

Speculation surrounds the interior features of the C-Class EQ, with expectations that the top-spec model will include the expansive 39.1-inch ‘Hyperscreen’ dashboard, which spans the full width of the cabin.
