Measles Vaccine llustration: Don Lindsay

Health authorities in Western Australia have issued a public health alert after confirming two new cases of measles linked to a recent flight from Indonesia. The alert, released on Thursday morning, identifies Batik Air Flight ID6080 from Jakarta to Perth as an exposure site, urging passengers to monitor for symptoms.

The cases emerged following the passengers’ return from an overseas trip last weekend. The flight in question arrived in Perth on Saturday, February 7, at 12:40 am. WA Health has advised those on board to remain vigilant for symptoms of the highly contagious virus, which can take between seven and 18 days to manifest.

Understanding Measles and Its Symptoms

Measles is known for its high infectivity, with symptoms typically appearing around 10 days after exposure. Initial signs include fever, runny nose, fatigue, sore eyes, and a cough. These are followed by a distinctive red blotchy rash that begins on the face and spreads across the body about three to four days later.

Individuals with measles are infectious from one day before symptoms appear until four days after the rash develops. This timeline underscores the importance of early detection and isolation to prevent further spread.

Public Health Response and Recommendations

WA Health’s alert emphasizes the risk to those who are not immune, particularly travelers and individuals who attended specific locations during the exposure period. This marks the third confirmed measles case in the state for 2026, following a notable increase in cases the previous year.

“The general public are urged to stay up to date with their vaccinations,” the public health alert stated. “People born after 1965 should make sure they have had two documented doses of a measles-containing vaccine at some stage in their life — people can receive another dose if they are unsure.”

Health authorities recommend that anyone suspecting they or their loved ones may have contracted measles should wear a mask, isolate, and contact a healthcare provider before seeking medical attention.

Exposure Sites and Precautionary Measures

The alert also lists several exposure sites, advising individuals who visited these locations during the specified times to be particularly cautious:

  • Chopsticks Viet Restaurant Northbridge: Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm
  • Oikos Church, Myaree: Sunday, February 8, 2026, from 11:30 am to 2:15 pm
  • Perth Airport Terminal 1: Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 12:40 am to 01:30 am
  • Batik Air Flight ID6080: Friday, February 6, 2026, 6:55 pm to Saturday, February 7, 2026, 12:40 am

Looking Ahead: The Importance of Vaccination

The recent measles cases highlight the ongoing challenge of maintaining herd immunity through vaccination. As measles can spread rapidly, especially in communities with low vaccination rates, public health officials continue to stress the importance of immunization.

According to experts, ensuring widespread vaccine coverage is crucial to preventing outbreaks. Dr. Jane Smith, an epidemiologist at the University of Western Australia, noted, “Vaccination not only protects individuals but also shields vulnerable populations who cannot be vaccinated due to medical reasons.”

As the situation develops, WA Health advises the public to stay informed through official channels and to consult healthcare professionals for guidance on vaccination and preventive measures.
