Matt Damon has undergone a remarkable transformation for his role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, The Odyssey. The actor, known for his versatility and commitment to roles, slimmed down to his high school weight, growing a beard for over a year to embody his character fully.
Speaking on the New Heights podcast hosted by Jason and Travis Kelce, Damon shared insights into his rigorous preparation. “I had a beard like yours for like a year,” he told the hosts. “I was in really good shape. I lost a lot of weight. [Nolan] wanted me lean but strong.”
Transformation Through Diet and Exercise
To achieve this physical transformation, Damon made significant dietary changes. “Just because of this other thing that I did with my doctor, I stopped eating gluten,” he explained. “I used to walk around at between 185 and 200, and I did that whole movie at 167. And I haven’t been that light since high school. So it was a lot of training and a really strict diet.”
The actor’s commitment to the role was akin to training for a professional sport. “I imagine what that feels like for you guys, where you’re preparing,” Damon said to the Kelces. “It’s just part of your day, it’s part of your job, and you get really routinized about it and kinda build your day around all that stuff.”
Long-Term Lifestyle Changes
Even after filming wrapped, Damon has maintained his gluten-free lifestyle. “I’m done. I’m gluten-free everything,” the Good Will Hunting actor declared. “I found a gluten-free beer. It’s been so long since I’ve had gluten, I can’t tell if it’s good or not. So that’s a good sign.”
This dedication to his health and role preparation is not new for Damon, who has previously undergone significant physical changes for films like The Martian and the Bourne series. His ability to adapt physically and mentally to each role is a testament to his professionalism and passion for the craft.
Anticipation for Nolan’s Epic
The Odyssey, directed by Nolan, promises to be a cinematic spectacle. The film, an adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, features an ensemble cast including Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron alongside Damon. Notably, it is Nolan’s first film to be shot on IMAX 70mm film, enhancing the visual grandeur of the epic tale.
