Mark Beretta, the well-known sports presenter, has disclosed the reasons behind his surprising decision to leave Channel 7’s Sunrise after 22 years. The announcement, which came last month, left audiences stunned as Beretta had been a staple of the morning show since he first appeared in 2000 and formally joined in 2003. Describing the role as his “dream” and “an honour,” Beretta has now opened up about the personal and professional factors influencing his departure.
“It’s fair to say it was a combination [of Channel 7’s choice and mine],” he told the Daily Telegraph. “I could see what was coming and I didn’t want to hang around for that.” Beretta explained that the television landscape has become increasingly challenging, prompting his decision to step back after more than two decades with the show. “And, to be honest, it’s been a harrowing couple of years,” he added. “There’s been a lot going on away from Sunrise and it’s time for a reset.”
Personal Struggles and Family Challenges
For Beretta, affectionately known as “Beretts” by viewers, the past six years have been particularly difficult on a personal level. In 2019, his mother was diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer, and in 2022, his father was also diagnosed with cancer. Tragically, his father passed away earlier this year.
The emotional toll of these family challenges was compounded by the end of his 22-year marriage to his wife, Rachel, in 2023. “When my father died, I began to question whether there was more to life than being on the breakfast show,” Beretta revealed. He took a three-week hiatus from his job to spend precious time with his father, who “had a lot he wanted to tell” him.
“We don’t have a lot of time left with her and that’s a big part of my thinking at the moment,” Beretta explained regarding his mother’s progressing illness. “The job is great, and it’s fun, and I get a lot of satisfaction out of it. But, I don’t want to lose this time.”
Support and New Beginnings
During these challenging times, Beretta has found support in a new partner, whom he described as “super kind and super supportive.” She was by his side through the loss of his father and played a significant role in his decision to leave Sunrise. “She helped me see what was important,” he noted.
As he prepares to wrap up his tenure on Sunrise this week, Beretta plans to focus on family and personal well-being. He intends to spend time with his mother and embark on a journey around Australia in a campervan. While Beretta has not ruled out a return to television, he anticipates remaining involved in the sports industry, potentially in a production capacity or another role.
Looking Forward
Mark Beretta’s departure from Sunrise marks the end of an era for the popular morning show. His decision reflects broader trends in the television industry, where personal life and professional demands increasingly intersect. As audiences bid farewell to a familiar face, Beretta’s story is a poignant reminder of the human elements behind the headlines.
Mark Beretta will officially conclude his time on Sunrise on Friday, December 12, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and resilience.
