lok-sabha-turmoil-rahul-gandhi-s-gag-order-sparks-chaos-modi-s-address-delayed

Uproarious scenes unfolded in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday as Opposition protests over a gag order on Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi led to yet another disruption of parliamentary proceedings. The chaos forced the postponement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled response to the Motion of Thanks on the President’s address, a key event in the parliamentary calendar.

At the heart of the controversy is Rahul Gandhi’s attempt to read excerpts from the memoirs of former Army Chief MM Naravane, which he used to criticize the government’s alleged “indecisiveness” during the 2020 Doklam standoff. The situation escalated when BJP MP Nishikant Dubey read from a series of books inside the House, defying Speaker Om Birla’s ruling that barred members from such actions, especially after Gandhi was disallowed from quoting Naravane’s memoirs.

Protests and Adjournments

The day was marked by multiple adjournments, beginning with a disruption just before 5 PM as the House reconvened for the Prime Minister’s reply. Opposition MPs, including women leaders Varsha Gaikwad and Jyotimani, blocked the seats of ruling party members, including Modi’s chair, with banners demanding justice and protesting the suspension of eight Opposition MPs and the silencing of Gandhi.

BJP MP Sandhya Rai, overseeing the proceedings, adjourned the House within seconds, even as BJP lawmaker PP Chaudhary was in the middle of his speech. The blockade by the women MPs ended only after interventions from several ministers.

Morning Disruptions and Opposition Strategy

Earlier in the day, the House faced its first adjournment at 11:05 AM, with Opposition members raising slogans against the government over the Doklam issue. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal’s statement on the India-US trade deal was drowned out by protests, leading to another adjournment until 2 PM.

When proceedings resumed, the protests intensified. Congress, TMC, DMK, and other INDIA bloc MPs carried banners targeting the government over the Doklam standoff. Amid the uproar, TDP MP Krishna Prasad Tenneti allowed Dubey to speak, who then made allegations against the Nehru-Gandhi family, prompting warnings from Tenneti.

“Do whatever you find suitable!” read the life-size banners carried by Opposition MPs, a direct jab at the government’s handling of national security issues.

Political Drama and Personal Exchanges

Outside the parliamentary chambers, the political drama continued. Rahul Gandhi, visibly frustrated, showed a copy of Naravane’s memoirs to the media, stating his intention to personally hand it to the Prime Minister. “I don’t think the PM will have the guts to come to the Lok Sabha today,” Gandhi remarked, challenging Modi to read the memoir and reveal the truth to the nation.

In a separate exchange, Rahul Gandhi called former colleague Ravneet Singh Bittu a “traitor friend,” to which Bittu, now a Union minister, retorted with a “desh ke dushman” jibe. Bittu, a three-time MP from Ludhiana and Anandpur Sahib, had switched allegiance to the BJP ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Implications and Forward-Looking Analysis

The ongoing disruptions in the Lok Sabha underscore the deepening rift between the ruling party and the Opposition. The repeated adjournments and the postponement of the Prime Minister’s address highlight the challenges in maintaining parliamentary decorum and ensuring productive legislative sessions.

Experts suggest that the current impasse could have long-term implications for the legislative process, potentially delaying key policy discussions and decisions. The Opposition’s strategy to leverage high-profile issues like the Doklam standoff reflects a broader attempt to hold the government accountable on national security and governance.

“This is Mr Naravane’s book. He has given a full account of Ladakh in it. I have been told I cannot quote from the book. But the key line is what the PM said: ‘Jo uchit samjho wo karo’ (Do what you think is right),” Gandhi urged the youth to read the memoir, emphasizing its significance.

As the Lok Sabha prepares to reconvene, all eyes will be on the next steps taken by both the government and the Opposition. The resolution of this standoff will be crucial in determining the trajectory of the current parliamentary session and its impact on the political landscape.
