Adrian Newstead, a distinguished Indigenous art dealer, and Russell Cheek, a performer and quizmaster, have shared a unique friendship forged in the chilly waters of the Bondi Icebergs swimming pool. For 17 years, the duo has met almost every morning for a swim, a ritual that has weathered even the occasional ban from the pool.

Their friendship began in 2008, introduced by a mutual friend at the Icebergs swimming club café. “I thought he was a very cultured individual who could talk to anyone about anything,” Russell recalls of their first meeting. Since then, the pair has shared countless cups of coffee post-swim, discussing everything from sports to art and politics.

The Bond of Cold Water

Neither Adrian nor Russell has ever shied away from the cold. “The pool temperature can be 16 degrees, and we’ll still say it’s beautiful,” Russell notes, describing their shared code for the frigid water. Their morning swims have become a tonic, a way to start the day as the sun rises over Bondi.

Adrian’s life is a tapestry of artistic engagement. Known for his energy and connections within the art world, he often travels to remote areas like Balgo and Yuendumu, camping under the stars to connect with Indigenous artists. His dedication to art led him to Paris in 2016 to showcase a collection of Indigenous Art Brut, a trip where Russell served as his interpreter.

Challenges and Triumphs

Despite their strong bond, the friends have faced challenges. Adrian’s temper once led to a year-long ban from the Icebergs café, club, and pool after a dispute over environmental concerns with management. Russell, however, takes these quirks in stride, valuing Adrian’s passion and drive.

Russell, on the other hand, is known for his empathy and connection with people. His care extended to Jon Lewis, a photographer with dementia whom they helped by integrating him into their swimming routine. Russell’s past is as colorful as his present; a former actor and founding member of the Castanet Club, he once won a $142,000 jackpot on “Sale of the Century,” which allowed him to secure his Bondi home.

Shared Lives and Future Promises

Their friendship is marked by shared routines and mutual encouragement. “Russell was the one who encouraged me to swim regularly,” Adrian admits. Their daily swims, from 6:47 am to 7:25 am, have become a cornerstone of their lives, a commitment to health and camaraderie.

Adrian and Russell’s conversations span a wide range of topics, from the intricacies of swimming techniques to the beauty of the women in their lives. “We’re not promised tomorrow,” Russell reflects, “but we’ve vowed to go on for as long as we possibly can.”

Looking Ahead

Their story is a testament to the power of friendship and routine. As they continue their daily swims, Adrian and Russell remain an inspiration to those around them, embodying the spirit of perseverance and the joy of shared experiences.

For Adrian and Russell, the pool is more than just a place to swim; it’s a stage for their enduring friendship, a reminder of the bonds that can be formed in the most unexpected places.
