Gold Coast Titans CEO Steve Mitchell has expressed confidence in the club’s new direction under incoming coach Josh Hannay, who is set to take over following the 2025 finals campaign with Cronulla. Hannay will replace veteran coach Des Hasler, who will depart a year early at the end of the current season. This strategic shift is part of the Titans’ broader effort to rejuvenate their performance and achieve better results on the field.

Hannay, currently serving as an assistant coach with both the Maroons and the Sharks, has been signed on a three-year contract starting in the 2026 season. Mitchell believes Hannay’s appointment will inject a “burst of energy” into the team, offering players an opportunity to embrace a fresh vision and direction. “They’re a great group, we’ve got a great group of players, they’re a really good roster and they’re really good human beings,” Mitchell stated, acknowledging the mixed emotions surrounding Hasler’s departure and Hannay’s arrival.

Challenges and Aspirations

The Titans have long been grappling with underperformance despite having a talented roster. Hasler, who joined the Titans in 2024 amidst high expectations, struggled to meet the club’s aspirations during his tenure. “Unfortunately, the results haven’t run the way we wanted, nor have they touched on our aspirations, but everyone’s a genius in hindsight,” Mitchell remarked, praising Hasler’s dedication and work ethic.

Hannay’s established relationships with key players like captain Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and Moeaki Fotuaika, through his role with the Queensland Maroons, are seen as a significant advantage. His involvement with emerging talents such as Jayden Campbell, who is transitioning into the halves, highlights Hannay’s focus on player development.

Expert Insights and Future Prospects

Mitchell emphasized Hannay’s track record of success, noting his role in Queensland’s State of Origin victories and Cronulla’s consistent finals appearances. “His work with Billy and the feedback that comes from within that programme, and his connection with the playgroup through that programme, and the likes of everyone from Tino through JC through Dave Fifita,” Mitchell explained, underscoring Hannay’s rapport with players as a critical component of his coaching philosophy.

“A pass mark for him; success is important, winning on the field is really important, winning more than we lose is important,” Mitchell stated, outlining the club’s expectations for Hannay’s tenure.

Structural Changes and Strategic Vision

The appointment of Hannay is part of a larger restructuring within the Titans’ coaching and management teams. Scott Sattler, the club’s inaugural general manager of football, will return as director of football (NRL), while Anthony Laffranchi, a foundation Titans player, will assume the role of head of recruitment. These changes are aimed at addressing longstanding issues within the men’s programme, which has seen limited success since the club’s inception in 2007.

Mitchell highlighted the need for a comprehensive review of the club’s operations, stating, “We need to look at the business holistically; we should all be under review.” He stressed the importance of focusing on player pathways and development, ensuring that local talent has the opportunity to shine on the national stage.

Looking Ahead

As the Titans prepare for the transition, Hasler will remain in charge for the final two games of the season. The team is set to face the Dolphins at Suncorp Stadium on Sunday, followed by a home game against the Wests Tigers in Round 27. The club’s leadership is determined to provide Hannay with the necessary resources and support to effect meaningful change and drive the team towards success.

“We are absolutely determined to make sure he’s got the resourcing around him that will help make the changes and not leave him there just trying to coach by himself,” Mitchell affirmed, reflecting the club’s commitment to a collaborative and supportive environment.

The Titans’ strategic overhaul, spearheaded by Hannay’s appointment, marks a pivotal moment for the club as it seeks to redefine its identity and achieve sustained success in the competitive NRL landscape.
