In a remarkable blend of classic style and modern technology, comedian Jimmy Carr has taken delivery of his newly electrified Aston Martin DB6. The transformation, carried out by British classic car specialist Electrogenic, offers a 150-mile electric range and supports fast charging at 100 kW. This conversion marks a significant milestone in the evolution of classic cars, marrying vintage aesthetics with sustainable innovation.
Electrogenic, based in Oxfordshire, has carved a niche in converting iconic classic cars from internal combustion engines to electric power. The firm’s portfolio includes a classic Mini Cooper, a DeLorean DMC-12, a Jaguar XKE, and a 1920s Rolls-Royce Phantom II owned by Hollywood actor Jason Momoa. The latest project, Jimmy Carr’s DB6, showcases the company’s expertise in preserving the essence of classic vehicles while enhancing their performance and sustainability.
Electrogenic’s Innovative Approach
The conversion of Carr’s Aston Martin DB6 involved replacing the traditional six-cylinder engine with a 160 kW (200 bhp) electric motor and a battery pack. Although the electrified DB6 has slightly less power and torque than its original version, it offers a 0-60 mph time of 6.5 seconds. For those seeking more power, Electrogenic provides an upgrade option with a 210 kW (280 bhp) motor, 450 Nm of torque, and a 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds. This enhanced model also includes upgraded sports suspension, catering to enthusiasts who desire both performance and eco-friendliness.
The converted DB6 maintains a real-world range of 150 miles, thanks to its CCS charging capability, which allows the battery to be charged at up to 100 kW. Additionally, an on-board 6.6 kW AC charger facilitates convenient home charging. The vehicle offers Eco and Sport drive modes, while its regenerative braking system can be adjusted to match driver preferences.
Preserving Heritage While Embracing the Future
One of Electrogenic’s key selling points is its commitment to preserving the original structure of classic cars. The company ensures that no cutting is required during the conversion process, making every modification entirely reversible. This approach allows owners to enjoy the benefits of electric power without compromising the car’s historical integrity.
The interior of Carr’s DB6 remains largely unchanged, with only subtle modifications to the dashboard dials to accommodate the new electric drivetrain. Steve Drummond, Electrogenic’s chief executive, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “We were delighted to be asked to convert Jimmy Carr’s cherished Aston Martin DB6 from petrol to state-of-the-art electric power. Electrogenic’s conversion gives effortless and reliable performance to match its stunning looks, and we’re extremely proud of the results.”
“As with all our work with classic vehicles, the conversion is in keeping with the original character of the car, delivering a familiar but now hassle-free driving experience.” – Steve Drummond, Electrogenic CEO
The Growing Trend of Electrifying Classics
The electrification of classic cars is gaining momentum as enthusiasts seek to combine nostalgia with modern-day efficiency and reliability. The shift from traditional engines to electric power not only reduces emissions but also enhances the driving experience by making these vehicles easier to maintain and more dependable.
Electrogenic’s work is part of a broader trend in the automotive world, where sustainability and innovation are increasingly prioritized. The company’s ability to convert both manual and automatic DB6s to electric power demonstrates its versatility and commitment to meeting diverse customer needs.
Jimmy Carr’s electrified DB6 will be showcased at the Salon Privé concours and car show at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, until August 31. This event offers car enthusiasts the opportunity to witness firsthand the seamless integration of classic design and cutting-edge technology.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the conversion of classic cars to electric power represents a promising path forward, preserving the legacy of timeless designs while embracing the future of sustainable transportation.
