Jenson Button, the 2009 Formula 1 World Champion, has voiced his observations on the growing confidence of Lando Norris as he narrows the gap to his McLaren teammate and current championship leader, Oscar Piastri. Speaking ahead of the United States Grand Prix, Button emphasized the significance of Norris’s recent performances and his potential to gain a psychological edge in the remaining races of the season.
Button noted that if Norris could “come out on top” at the Circuit of The Americas, it would bolster his confidence significantly for the final five race weekends. “I think so, he seems very positive in the last couple of races. Obviously, the incident in Singapore wasn’t good; you never want to touch your teammate in a racing scenario. He seems confident in himself and, from the word go, he’s had three tenths on Oscar and it’s continued throughout the whole of the weekend,” Button explained to Sky Sports F1.
Lando Norris’s Rising Confidence
The recent races have seen Norris delivering strong performances, which Button believes are crucial for his mental fortitude. “If he’s able to come out on top here, it’s a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season, and it’s more difficult then for Oscar as well,” Button added. The psychological dynamics within the McLaren team have shifted, with Norris appearing more self-assured while Piastri faces mounting pressure.
“The confidence is with Lando, and the negativity is more with Oscar, which we never thought would happen with Oscar! But it happens, we’re all human. It’s sport — mentally, this sport is so tough.”
Oscar Piastri’s Challenge
Oscar Piastri, who has been leading the championship, now finds himself in a challenging position. With five race weekends remaining, including two sprint races, Piastri’s lead over Norris has shrunk to just 14 points. The internal competition within McLaren has intensified, further compounded by the resurgence of Max Verstappen.
Verstappen, the formidable Red Bull driver, has been on a winning streak post-summer break, claiming victories in the Italian, Azerbaijan, and United States Grands Prix, along with a sprint race win at the Circuit of The Americas. His consistent performance has closed the gap in the standings to 40 points behind Piastri and 26 points behind Norris.
Max Verstappen’s Resurgence
The presence of Verstappen adds an additional layer of complexity to the championship battle. His ability to consistently secure top finishes has put pressure on both McLaren drivers. The Dutchman’s recent form has demonstrated his capacity to influence the championship outcome, making the final races of the season even more critical for Norris and Piastri.

Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, the psychological aspect of racing will play a crucial role in determining the championship’s outcome. The battle within McLaren, coupled with Verstappen’s resurgence, sets the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the season. Each race will test the drivers’ mental resilience and strategic acumen as they navigate the challenges ahead.
The upcoming races will not only decide the championship but also shape the future dynamics within the McLaren team. The ability of Norris and Piastri to manage pressure and capitalize on their strengths will be pivotal in the final stretch of the season.
