Jack Patten, an Australian actor, is stepping into the spotlight as Hollywood’s latest Robin Hood. The 28-year-old, who graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) just two years ago, is making his debut in a glossy 10-part TV series for MGM+, set to air on Stan in Australia. This series marks Hollywood’s first attempt at the Robin Hood legend since the 2018 film starring Taron Egerton.
Patten’s portrayal of the iconic folklore hero is a departure from the classic depictions. “When I thought of Robin Hood, I thought about the fox – even though I never watched that cartoon version,” Patten admitted during an interview at a Sydney café. Despite not growing up with the tales of Robin Hood, Patten is set to bring a fresh perspective to the character, embodying a more grounded and human version of the legendary outlaw.
A New Take on a Timeless Legend
The new series offers a post-Game of Thrones historical drama feel, complete with intense scenes and a gripping narrative. Set in the gritty Middle Ages, Patten’s Robin Hood is a teenage orphan who rises against Norman conquerors after they seize his community’s land and outlaw their religion. “It felt really human, despite it being quite genre,” Patten explained, highlighting the show’s blend of romance and action.
Joining Patten is a cast of both newcomers and familiar faces, including Sean Bean as the corrupt Sheriff of Nottingham, Connie Nielsen, and Steven Waddington. The series was filmed over eight months in Serbia, where the cast endured temperatures as low as -7°C, adding to the show’s authentic medieval atmosphere.
From AFL Dreams to Acting Stardom
Patten’s journey to acting was not straightforward. Raised in Western Sydney’s Hills District, he initially dreamed of becoming a professional AFL player. However, a knee injury at 17 ended those aspirations. “I loved footy. Loved watching it. Loved playing it,” he reflected. “Ultimately though, I wasn’t good enough.”
After his sports career was cut short, Patten found himself working at a school, unsure of his next steps. A colleague suggested acting classes, which led him to The Hub Studio in Chippendale. There, under the guidance of veteran teacher Kevin Jackson, Patten discovered a new passion. “It was the art of conversation,” he said, recalling how acting classes opened his eyes to a world beyond sports.
NIDA and Beyond
With newfound determination, Patten auditioned for NIDA, inspired by the success of alumni like Cate Blanchett. “I hadn’t had a game day in so long,” he said, describing his preparation for the audition. His efforts paid off, as he was accepted on his first try. “Even to get a call back and be in the room with all these people, I felt like a bit of a fraud,” he admitted, yet his talent and dedication shone through.
Since graduating, Patten has been steadily building his career. His first role was a guest spot on NCIS: Sydney, followed by local theatre work and a part in the upcoming Netflix film War Machine alongside Dennis Quaid. His performance caught the attention of producer Todd Lieberman, leading to his casting as Robin Hood.
The Road Ahead
As Patten prepares for the series’ release, he remains focused on the future. “If we get green lit for a second season, I’ll be practicing my horse riding and archery at home,” he said, demonstrating his commitment to honing his craft. With his debut as Robin Hood, Patten is poised to capture the hearts of audiences worldwide, proving that sometimes, dreams can take unexpected but rewarding turns.
The announcement of Patten’s role as Robin Hood comes at a time when audiences are eager for new interpretations of classic tales. “I think that theme of justice is forever going to be something that audiences are attracted to,” Patten stated, underscoring the timeless appeal of the Robin Hood legend.
