The state government has unveiled a new fly-through video showcasing the $3.2 billion Women’s and Children’s Hospital project, as construction progresses on an eight-storey carpark. The footage provides the first glimpse of the hospital’s interiors, with the main building’s construction slated to begin later this year.
Located on the former site of the heritage Thebarton Police Barracks, the new hospital will stand adjacent to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in the northwestern parklands. The government confirmed today that the project is on schedule for completion by 2031. It will feature 414 overnight beds, an increase of 56 beds compared to the current facility, with the potential to add 20 more in the future.
Expanding Capacity and Modernizing Facilities
Three-quarters of the carpark structure is already completed, with the final design accommodating 1,300 parking spaces—a 40% increase over the existing North Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital. This expansion is part of a broader effort to modernize healthcare facilities and improve accessibility for patients and staff alike.
Meanwhile, new advisors have been engaged to assist in the design of specialized areas within the hospital, such as paediatrics and adolescent mental health services. This phase will emphasize optimizing patient flows and ensuring the functionality of each department, including strategic placement of equipment and technology.
Designing for the Future
Premier Peter Malinauskas expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress, stating, “It is an incredibly exciting time for the project and the future of our new world-class Women’s and Children’s Hospital.” He emphasized the hospital’s long-term vision, noting, “This hospital is being designed to stand the test of time—we’re planning for now and into the next 100 years for South Australian women, mothers, babies, children, and their families.”

Historical Context and Future Implications
The decision to replace the heritage-listed Thebarton Police Barracks with a state-of-the-art medical facility was not without controversy. However, proponents argue that the new hospital will provide critical healthcare services to a growing population and serve as a model for future medical infrastructure projects.
According to healthcare experts, the increased capacity and modern amenities will significantly improve patient care and outcomes. The hospital’s design incorporates the latest advancements in medical technology and patient-centered care, setting a new standard for healthcare facilities in the region.
As construction continues, the focus will remain on meeting the project’s timeline and ensuring that the hospital meets the needs of South Australians for generations to come. The completion of this project will mark a significant milestone in the state’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services and infrastructure.
