Honda Australia has successfully secured additional stock of the highly sought-after Civic Type R, yet the vehicles have already sold out despite a significant price increase. The latest batch of the Japanese automaker’s popular model is not available for direct order by the public, highlighting the continued strong demand for the high-performance hatchback.
The announcement comes as CarExpert reports that most of the new ‘FL5’ Type R units will be delivered to customers who had previously expressed interest, following a similar pattern to the last release in August 2025. Although the current pricing and specifications are listed on the Honda Australia website, potential buyers are greeted with a message stating, “Due to overwhelming demand, all current stock has been exhausted.”
Price Surge and New Features
The Civic Type R is now priced at $85,500 drive-away, marking a $6,500 increase from its last availability and a substantial $12,900 rise from the model’s 2023 launch price. Honda Australia attributes part of this price hike to the inclusion of a carbon-fibre rear wing, which was previously a $5,300 optional extra now standard on the vehicle.
Despite the price increase, the Civic Type R maintains its core specifications. It continues to be powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, producing 235kW of power and 420Nm of torque. The engine is paired with a six-speed manual transmission featuring automatic rev-matching, delivering power exclusively to the front wheels.
Performance and Technology
The Civic Type R is equipped with a suite of performance-enhancing features, including adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes, a limited-slip differential, and a distinctive three-outlet valved exhaust system. The vehicle also boasts 19-inch black alloy wheels, an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, and sports seats finished in striking red upholstery.
On the technology front, the hatchback includes a 9.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a 10.2-inch digital instrument display designed to resemble a cockpit.
Market Position and Competition
The increased price positions the Civic Type R significantly higher than its competitors, such as the Toyota GR Corolla, which starts at $67,990 before on-road costs, and the Volkswagen Golf R, priced at $71,990 before on-road expenses. This pricing strategy reflects the premium features and performance capabilities of the Type R, but may also influence buyer decisions in a competitive market.
It remains uncertain when additional units of the FL5 Type R will arrive in Australia or how many will be made available. The uncertainty is compounded by the fact that the current-generation Civic Type R has been discontinued in Europe, and orders for the base model have been suspended in Japan, raising questions about the model’s future availability.
Looking Ahead
As Honda navigates these challenges, the brand’s strategy in managing supply and demand will be crucial. The Civic Type R’s enduring popularity underscores its reputation as a high-performance vehicle, yet the rising costs and limited availability could impact its market share.
Industry experts suggest that Honda’s ability to balance exclusivity with accessibility will determine the Civic Type R’s continued success. As the automotive landscape evolves, enthusiasts and potential buyers alike will be watching closely for the next steps from Honda regarding this iconic model.
