Great Wall Motor (GWM) is set to begin pre-sales of its latest Tank 400 plug-in hybrid SUV on October 21, offering both the existing Hi4-T variant and a newly introduced Hi4-Z model. The vehicle was officially unveiled on September 22 in China, showcasing a refreshed design and upgraded configurations that promise to enhance both performance and aesthetic appeal.

The announcement comes as GWM continues to solidify its presence in the hybrid vehicle market, responding to increasing consumer demand for environmentally friendly and technologically advanced vehicles. The new Tank 400 maintains much of the current model’s design but introduces several notable changes.

Design and Technological Advancements

The exterior of the Tank 400 has been subtly refined with the addition of black decorative trim on the front bumper and an updated line layout. A standout feature is the new roof-mounted lidar, along with side and rearview cameras, which support GWM’s third-generation Coffee Pilot Ultra advanced driving assistance system. This system is designed to facilitate urban and highway NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) capabilities, enhancing safety and convenience for drivers.

In terms of aesthetics, a new “Dunhuang Purple” paint option has been introduced, adding a touch of elegance to the vehicle’s appearance. The tail badges have also been updated, with the “GWM TANK” and “Great Wall Motors” logos positioned at the top and the “Tank 400” and “Hi4-T / Hi4-Z” logos at the bottom.

Powertrain Options and Performance

The Tank 400 measures 4964/1970/1905 mm (length/width/height) with a wheelbase of 2850 mm, making it slightly shorter, wider, and taller than its predecessor. Two powertrain options are available, catering to different consumer preferences.

Hi4-Z Variant

The Hi4-Z variant shares its powertrain with the Tank 500 Hi4-Z, featuring a 2.0T engine combined with dual P2 and P4 electric motors. This setup delivers a fuel consumption rate of 8.3L/100km. The engine produces a maximum power of 185 kW (248 hp) and a peak torque of 380 Nm. The P2 and P4 motors offer maximum power outputs of 215 kW (288 hp) and 240 kW (322 hp), respectively. A 59.05 kWh ternary lithium battery pack provides a CLTC pure electric range of 200 km.

Hi4-T Variant

The Hi4-T variant continues to utilize a plug-in hybrid system with the same 2.0T engine as the Hi4-Z, paired with an electric motor that generates a maximum power of 120 kW (161 hp). This variant achieves a fuel consumption rate of 8.4L/100km and is equipped with a 37.1 kWh ternary lithium battery pack, offering a CLTC pure electric range of 105 km.

Interior Features and Comfort

The interior of the Tank 400 mirrors the existing model, featuring a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel and a 15.6-inch floating central control screen. Both are powered by GWM’s latest Coffee 3 operating system, ensuring a seamless and intuitive user experience.

Additional configurations include a mobile phone wireless charging panel, physical buttons on the center console for vehicle controls, a heads-up display (HUD), a digital rearview mirror, and a 15.6-inch rear entertainment screen. The vehicle also boasts an onboard refrigerator, 14 speakers (upgraded from 10), and luxurious Nappa leather seats, enhancing comfort and convenience for passengers.

Market Implications and Future Prospects

The launch of the Tank 400 PHEV represents GWM’s strategic move to capture a larger share of the growing hybrid vehicle market. As global demand for sustainable transportation solutions continues to rise, the company is well-positioned to meet consumer expectations with its blend of advanced technology and stylish design.

According to industry experts, the introduction of the Hi4-Z variant could attract a new segment of environmentally conscious consumers seeking higher performance and extended electric range. Meanwhile, the continued offering of the Hi4-T variant ensures that GWM caters to a broader audience with varying needs and preferences.

Looking ahead, GWM’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is likely to drive further advancements in its vehicle lineup. As the automotive industry evolves, the company’s focus on hybrid technology and cutting-edge features will be crucial in maintaining its competitive edge.

The pre-sale of the Tank 400 PHEV on October 21 marks a significant milestone for GWM, as it continues to expand its portfolio of hybrid vehicles and reinforce its reputation as a leader in the automotive sector.
