gotzinger-smallgoods-recalls-deli-meats-in-nsw-and-queensland-over-listeria-concerns

A range of deli meats sold in New South Wales and Queensland has been urgently recalled due to fears of listeria contamination. Gotzinger Smallgoods, a prominent producer, announced the recall of its 1kg sliced silverside, 1kg sliced roast beef, 1kg 4×4 sliced ham, 1kg sliced champagne ham, and 1kg sliced provincial ham products.

The recall affects products distributed through retail outlets and butcher shops across NSW and Queensland, as confirmed by Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ). The affected products carry use-by dates up to and including:

  • Sliced Silverside 1kg: 20 December 2025
  • Sliced Roast Beef and 4×4 Ham Sliced 1kg: 13 December 2025
  • Champagne Ham Sliced 1kg: 17 December 2025
  • Provincial Ham Sliced 1kg: 5 December 2025

FSANZ has advised consumers to refrain from eating the affected products and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

“Consumers should return the products to the place of purchase for a full refund,” the recall notice stated. “Any consumers concerned about their health should seek medical advice.”

Health Risks and Precautions

Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria detected in the products, can cause severe illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as pregnant women, unborn babies, neonates, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. The general population may also experience illness if they consume contaminated food.

A spokesperson for Gotzinger Smallgoods explained that the company was alerted by food safety authorities about the presence of listeria in its 1kg sliced roast beef.

“As per the advice of Food Safety Authorities, we have immediately withdrawn this product from sale and recalled it from our customers,” the spokesperson said.

Company Response and Safety Measures

In response to the detection, Gotzinger Smallgoods has expanded the recall to include other related products as a precautionary measure. The company has assured that these specific products are produced separately from their other ranges and that no other Gotzinger Smallgoods products are affected.

The spokesperson emphasized the company’s commitment to food safety, stating,

“We remain fully committed to the highest food safety standards and are reviewing our processes to ensure that our products and operations remain an exemplar in the industry.”

Gotzinger has collaborated closely with distributors to ensure the swift removal of the affected products from all channels. While these products are primarily for food service and not directly available to retail consumers, the company has initiated a public recall to prioritize public safety.

Historical Context and Industry Standards

This recall is not an isolated incident in the food industry. Listeria outbreaks have historically prompted significant recalls and have led to increased scrutiny of food safety practices. The bacteria can thrive in cold environments, making deli meats a common vector for contamination.

Food safety experts often cite the need for rigorous testing and swift action to prevent outbreaks. The Australian food industry, regulated by FSANZ, adheres to strict safety standards to protect consumers, but recalls like this highlight the ongoing challenges in maintaining these standards.

Looking Ahead

As Gotzinger Smallgoods reviews its processes, the broader industry may also see renewed efforts to enhance safety protocols. Consumers are advised to remain vigilant and report any health concerns to medical professionals promptly.

For ongoing updates, consumers can rely on official channels and news outlets. The situation underscores the importance of food safety and the role of regulatory bodies in safeguarding public health.
