A Gold Coast toddler named Goldie is facing a rare and aggressive form of cancer, placing her among a small number of children globally diagnosed with the condition. At just 20 months old, her family is now in a race against time to secure specialized treatment overseas, which is critical for her survival.

Goldie’s health concerns began when she started losing motor skills, transitioning from nearly taking her first steps to being unable to bear weight at all. Despite the family’s repeated requests for medical imaging, it was not until months later that their worst fears were confirmed. Goldie, affectionately called “Golden Bean,” was rushed to the hospital in a critical state, where scans revealed a large tumor compressing nerves in her spine.

Diagnosis and Immediate Challenges

Goldie’s mother, Maddison Bennett, a former Jillaroo, recounted the devastating moment they learned of their daughter’s condition. “We find out our daughter has cancer, and not just the world’s rarest cancer but it’s super aggressive; it’s in her spine and pelvis,” Bennett told 7NEWS. The diagnosis was an extra-cranial malignant rhabdoid tumor, identified before Goldie even reached her second birthday, necessitating emergency spinal surgery.

Despite her young age, Goldie has already undergone four rounds of chemotherapy. However, she now urgently requires radiation therapy, a treatment not available in Australia for her specific needs. “Obviously radiation on a 20-month-old baby is quite intensive and can have lifelong consequences, so we’re trying to get her the best treatment which they actually don’t do here in Australia,” Bennett explained.

The Search for Specialized Treatment

Goldie’s case is so rare that it has entangled her in health system bureaucracy, delaying her access to potentially life-saving treatment abroad. “I feel like we’ve been let down as a family,” Bennett expressed. “So, we’ve got to do it ourselves.”

The family is urgently seeking proton therapy in Singapore, a more advanced form of radiation that targets the tumor while minimizing exposure to surrounding healthy tissues. This treatment is scheduled for next month, leaving the family with little time to arrange travel and accommodations.

“She deserves every single chance because she is a fighter,” Bennett said.

Community Support and Fundraising Efforts

To cover the costs associated with Goldie’s treatment, including urgent travel, extended accommodation, and medical insurance, the family has launched a fundraising campaign. The community’s response has been crucial in helping them navigate this challenging journey.

Proton therapy represents a beacon of hope for Goldie, offering a chance to stop the cancer in its tracks. This advanced treatment is known for its precision, reducing the risk of long-term side effects that are especially concerning for such a young patient.

Looking Ahead

The family’s determination to provide Goldie with the best possible care underscores the challenges faced by those dealing with rare medical conditions. As they prepare for the upcoming trip to Singapore, the Bennetts remain hopeful that Goldie’s story will not only bring awareness to her plight but also highlight the need for accessible specialized treatments within Australia.

Meanwhile, the community continues to rally around Goldie, offering support and donations to ensure she receives the care she so desperately needs. As the family prepares for the next steps, their focus remains on giving Goldie every opportunity to overcome this formidable challenge.
