Nine newsreader and former Today host Georgie Gardner has announced her departure from the network after nearly 25 years of service. Gardner, who currently anchors Sydney’s 6pm weekend news, is set to deliver her final bulletin on April 17.
“I could not be more grateful for the range of opportunities Nine has afforded me over nearly a quarter of a century,” Gardner expressed in a statement. “Anchoring news bulletins across the day, as well as reporting and hosting roles on virtually every news program at the network, has been incredibly satisfying and an enormous privilege.”
Gardner’s departure occurs amid a wave of turnover in on-air talent, as television networks grapple with a weakened advertising market. Nine’s TV division reported a 14 percent decline in revenue during its recent half-yearly financial results.
Industry-Wide Challenges
The television industry is facing significant challenges, with advertising revenue taking a hit due to changing viewer habits and increased competition from digital platforms. Gardner’s resignation is part of a broader trend, with other notable departures including Melbourne and Sydney weather presenters Livinia Nixon and Amber Sherlock, Adelaide newsreader Kate Collins, and Brisbane sports presenter Jonathan Uptin.
Nine’s TV and streaming boss Amanda Laing highlighted the network’s focus on evaluating remuneration across all departments. “We are looking at the remuneration across the entire business, from, yes, people on-air to people involved in production, to people in IT, to engineers, technology, all of these things,” Laing stated in November.
A Storied Career
Gardner began her career at Nine in 2002, initially presenting the 6pm weekday weather alongside Brian Henderson. Her national profile rose significantly when she joined the Today breakfast show as a newsreader in 2007 and later as a fill-in host until her emotional resignation in 2014. At the time, she described leaving the show as “not an easy decision to leave a show that is an Australian television institution.”
Despite her departure, Gardner returned to Today in 2018, co-hosting with Karl Stefanovic and Deborah Knight, marking the show’s only female hosting duo. However, this pairing was short-lived, and Gardner soon returned to her role at the Sydney news desk.
Legacy and Impact
Nine’s executive director of news and current affairs, Fiona Dear, praised Gardner’s versatility and impact. “It’s a remarkable achievement and during that time Georgie has been loved and respected by audiences across Australia,” Dear remarked. “She has had a front-row seat to some of the most important moments in history, delivering the biggest news stories to audiences first thing in the morning, in prime time at 6pm and late into the evening with Nightline.”
“I will be forever thankful for having worked with countless colleagues who are quite simply the best in the industry, and I am humbled by the knowledge that there are viewers who have followed my career,” Gardner reflected.
As Gardner prepares to step away from the anchor desk, the television industry continues to navigate its evolving landscape. Her departure underscores the ongoing shifts within the sector, as networks like Nine adapt to new economic realities and audience demands.
Gardner’s final broadcast will undoubtedly mark the end of an era for both her and the viewers who have followed her career. As the industry evolves, her contributions to Australian television will remain a significant part of its history.
