The Freo Farmers Market has a new arrangement with the City of Fremantle.

The Freo Farmers Market has cemented its place at Bruce Lee Reserve in Beaconsfield for at least the next three years, following a new sponsorship agreement with the City of Fremantle. The market, a staple of the local community, will continue to operate every Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon, maintaining its reputation as a plastic-free event.

Known for its vibrant atmosphere, the market features live music, children’s activities, and over 65 stallholders offering a diverse range of goods, from ready-to-eat food and fresh produce to clothing and artisan gifts. This agreement ensures that the market, which has been a beloved part of Fremantle since 2005, will continue to thrive in its current location.

A Community Staple Since 2005

Originally held at Fremantle College, the Freo Farmers Market moved to Bruce Lee Reserve in 2023 under an initial three-year funding agreement. The new sponsorship deal includes a subsidy from the city to cover part of the standard venue hire fees, highlighting the city’s commitment to supporting local initiatives.

Market manager Kylie Wheatley expressed her enthusiasm for the future, stating, “It’s an absolute privilege to work with WA farmers, small producers, foodies, and local artisans every Sunday. The City of Fremantle has been instrumental in providing a space for community that allows for business incubation and healthy lifestyle choices for Fremantle and surrounds.”

“For me, this year marks 21 years of running markets in Freo and 10 years at the helm of the Freo Farmers Market. My passion for Freo and the people who call it home has never diminished, and I’m very excited about the next three years.” – Kylie Wheatley, Market Manager

City’s Continued Support

Matt Hammond, Director of City Business, emphasized the city’s dedication to the market, noting its importance to the local community. “We know the Freo Farmers Market means a lot to the surrounding community,” he said. “This was reinforced during the year when the market was temporarily relocated to other venues after a wastewater incident put the reserve out of action for a few months.”

The city’s support ensures that the market remains accessible and affordable for both customers and stallholders, a crucial factor in its ongoing success. The temporary relocation earlier this year underscored the market’s resilience and the community’s unwavering support.

Looking Ahead

The new agreement represents not just a continuation but an opportunity for growth and innovation. With the backing of the City of Fremantle, the market is poised to expand its offerings and continue fostering a sense of community. The Freo Farmers Market is more than just a place to shop; it is a hub of local culture and sustainability.

As the market looks to the future, it aims to enhance its role as a platform for Western Australian farmers and artisans, promoting local products and sustainable practices. The next three years promise to bring new opportunities for engagement and development, solidifying the market’s role as a cornerstone of the Fremantle community.
