After toiling hard throughout the day, the Indian team had something to finally smile about as they picked up five wickets in the last session including the one of Joe Root but England still ran away with the day as they now have a massive lead of 345 runs in the first innings of the third Test, with three days still remaining in the game.

Another brilliant day. Another brilliant Test  for our captain @root66

It was England’s day through and through. India got a couple of wickets in the first session – dismissing both the openers but the home side was able to add 62 runs with contributions from Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed, Joe Root but more importantly Dawid Malan, who made a confident 27* in his return to Test matches after seven years.

Post lunch break, it was just a Joe Root show to which the Headingley crowd, Indian players and support staff and all those watching at home were witnesses. A highly talented cricketer on top of his game could do nothing wrong as he is scoring runs for fun and making centuries for breakfast.

Root with a string of fabulous backfoot punches, quick singles and attacking mindset was just controlling the game, which a very few are able to. Root has had a fantastic run throughout this year having hit over 1350 runs in Test cricket in 2021 including 6 centuries.

Test centuries this year  hundreds in this series

A batting genius @root66

Root and Malan stitched a 139-run partnership. India dismissed Malan at the stroke of tea, which proved to be helpful to them as they were able to send back Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttle quickly in the final session, both dismissed by Mohammed Shami.

But, Root was still there, before Jasprit Bumrah came back for his final spell of the day and produced a jaffa to disturb his stumps. Root’s wicket followed Moeen Ali, who tried to hit Ravindra Jadeja out of the attack but could get only as far as mid-on fielder.

Another wonderful innings from the skipper comes to an end.

Ollie Robinson and Sam Curran then moved their team’s innings forward before Siraj removed the latter two overs before the scheduled end of the day’s play. England ended the day at 423/8 and will be hoping to add a few quick runs in the morning session before India get to bat again.
