DJI has unveiled the Osmo Mobile 8, a groundbreaking addition to its renowned smartphone gimbal lineup. This latest model introduces Apple DockKit support, allowing seamless integration with the native iPhone camera, and offers 360° horizontal pan rotation, enhancing creative possibilities for content creators. The launch marks a significant evolution in smartphone stabilization technology.
With the introduction of Apple DockKit compatibility, the Osmo Mobile 8 stands out as one of the most versatile gimbals on the market. It offers three distinct tracking methods, catering to a wide range of shooting scenarios. This innovation is set to transform the way creators capture dynamic content.
Revolutionary Tracking Capabilities
The Osmo Mobile 8 offers unprecedented tracking flexibility through three separate systems. For iPhone users with iOS 18.5 or later, the gimbal supports Apple DockKit, Apple’s intelligent subject-tracking technology. This integration enables tracking within the native iPhone camera app and over 200 iOS applications, including TikTok and Instagram, without the need for DJI’s proprietary app.
The new DJI OM Multifunctional Module magnetically attaches to the gimbal, providing hardware-based tracking that works across native camera and livestreaming apps. Notably, this module can track pets as well as humans, expanding creative possibilities for animal content creators. It operates independently of DJI’s app, offering users the freedom to work with their preferred camera applications.
Meanwhile, the DJI Mimo app for iOS and Android introduces ActiveTrack 7.0, offering advanced tracking technology capable of following people, pets, or objects. The app’s Dual Lens Boost intelligently uses both wide-angle and telephoto lenses to maintain subject lock during fast movement or in crowded environments.
Multifunctional Module: Audio and Lighting Integration
Beyond tracking, the Multifunctional Module serves as an all-in-one content creation tool. It features a fill light with eight brightness levels and color temperature settings, controlled via a side wheel for precise adjustments. The module includes a built-in microphone receiver compatible with DJI Mic 3, DJI Mic 2, and DJI Mic Mini transmitters, ensuring professional-quality audio capture for livestreams and vlogs.
The magnetic attachment system allows for quick mounting and removal, while gesture control enables hands-free operation. Users can initiate intelligent tracking with a simple palm gesture, take photos with a “V” gesture, and adjust framing with a “Double L” gesture.
360° Pan Rotation and Enhanced Flexibility
The Osmo Mobile 8 is the first in the Osmo Mobile series to offer unlimited 360° horizontal pan rotation. This capability eliminates the traditional hard stop during wraparound shots, enabling smooth panoramic footage. Combined with intelligent tracking, the continuous rotation allows the gimbal to follow subjects through full circular movements without interruption.
For low-angle perspectives, the gimbal features an ultra-comfortable grip design specifically engineered for ground-level shooting. This complements the tracking system’s new pet-following capability, making it easier to capture pets from their eye level. An integrated extension rod extends the shooting range for higher vantage points, while built-in tripod legs provide stable tabletop operation.
Performance and Market Comparison
DJI’s seventh-generation three-axis stabilization technology delivers consistent stability across various shooting scenarios. The gimbal supports multiple follow modes, including Pan Follow, Pan-Tilt Follow, POV, Lock, and a faster profile for sports and action sequences. Users can switch between front and rear cameras with a button press, maintaining image quality during transitions.
The Osmo Mobile 8 weighs 370g and offers up to 10 hours of operating time. It can charge a connected phone during extended filming sessions, though heavy use of tracking and fill light features will reduce runtime. Charging is facilitated via a USB-C port on the handle.
Comparing the Osmo Mobile 8 to the Hohem iSteady V3 Ultra, the DJI gimbal offers broader compatibility with Apple DockKit support, though it lacks a dedicated preview screen. Both gimbals include fill lighting and support wireless microphone systems, with DJI’s system benefiting from compatibility with its established microphone ecosystem.
