When we decided to visit Austin as a family earlier this year, I had one primary concern: would there be anything to do for a toddler? However, the Texas state capital, with its small-town heart, quickly dispelled any doubts. As we discovered, Austin indeed offers something for everyone, including the youngest of travelers.
Austin, home to the University of Texas’ flagship campus, exudes a youthful and vibrant atmosphere. Known for its eclectic live music scene, the city is a hub for country, blues, and rock. Beyond music, Austin boasts museums, boutique shopping, hiking trails, and an array of food and entertainment options, making it a compelling destination for families.
Indulge in Austin’s Culinary Delights
No visit to Austin would be complete without sampling its renowned barbecue and Tex-Mex cuisine. Franklin Barbecue is often hailed as one of the best barbecue spots globally. However, be prepared to wait in line, sometimes as early as 6 or 7 a.m., as eager diners set up camp chairs and staff members take orders.
For those who prefer a more accessible option, Terry Black’s Barbecue offers multiple locations across Texas. While the brisket might not be as juicy as Franklin’s, the sausages are a standout. Other notable spots include LeRoy and Lewis, la Barbecue, The County Line, and Matt’s El Rancho.
Shopping and Culture on South Congress
After indulging in Austin’s culinary offerings, South Congress beckons with its vibrant character. This neighborhood south of Lady Bird Lake is a must-visit, showcasing Austin’s history through its boutiques and eateries. Notable shopping spots include Allens Boots, Maufrais, and the flagship Kendra Scott store.
While strolling, visitors can admire iconic murals such as “I Love You So Much” and “Willie For President,” adding a touch of local charm to the experience.
Exploring Austin’s Rich History and Nature
The Texas State Capitol, taller than the U.S. Capitol, stands as a testament to the state’s grand history. Visitors can explore its star-crested rotunda or join themed tours to delve deeper into Texas’ past. Meanwhile, the Congress Avenue Bridge offers a unique spectacle with its nightly bat flights, a beloved Austin ritual.
For outdoor enthusiasts, the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail at Lady Bird Lake provides picturesque views of Austin’s skyline. Mount Bonnell, one of Austin’s highest points, offers breathtaking vistas of the city and Texas Hill Country.
Family-Friendly Attractions
Austin offers a plethora of activities for families. The Texas Science & Natural History Museum, located on the University of Texas campus, captivates young minds with its dinosaur exhibits. Austin Duck Adventures provides a unique sightseeing experience by land and water, while Peter Pan Mini Golf offers whimsical fun.
The Thinkery, Austin’s children’s museum, combines science and technology with interactive exhibits, making it a hit with kids. Nearby Mueller Lake and its playground offer additional family-friendly activities.
Accommodations and Final Thoughts
For accommodations, Downright Austin, a new downtown hotel, offers a convenient location near the University campus and Franklin Barbecue. Despite some noise from the nearby interstate, the hotel provides spacious rooms and a welcoming atmosphere.
Overall, Austin exceeded our expectations as a family-friendly destination. While we missed out on the city’s famous late-night music scene due to our toddler, the abundance of daytime activities more than made up for it. Austin is undoubtedly a worthwhile stop for families exploring Texas.
