des-hasler-reflects-on-500-game-milestone-amidst-challenges-and-triumphs

Des Hasler, the seasoned NRL coach, has reached a significant milestone in his career, marking his 500th game as a coach. Despite the challenges he faces with the Gold Coast Titans, Hasler remains focused on the connections and impact he has made throughout his two-decade-long career. “With the other coaches who have surpassed 500 games or even young coaches on their journey, you learn the value of connections you make with people, the genuine ability to relate,” Hasler stated.

Hasler’s journey in coaching began in 1997 at the club level, and over the years, he has witnessed both triumphs and tribulations. “Twenty years down the track, 500 games down the track, people from the time I started coaching… when they come back and still are in your life, or your crossing over and come back and regale about past times, that’s when you realise wow, the impact you have on peoples’ lives,” Hasler reflected.

Challenges with the Titans

Currently, Hasler is at the helm of the Gold Coast Titans, a team that has struggled to find success. The Titans, with a roster that includes five fullbacks and two high-profile forwards, Tino Fa’asuamaleaui and David Fifita, have only managed 45 games between them since Hasler’s arrival. The team sits at the bottom of the league, casting doubt on Hasler’s future with the franchise.

Despite the uncertainty, Hasler remains undeterred. “I’m still enjoying it, I enjoy coaching. If you enjoy coaching, you keep doing it,” he said, dismissing speculation about his future. However, with only a year left on his contract, the club’s decision on his tenure remains to be seen.

A Storied Coaching Career

Hasler’s coaching career is marked by significant achievements and memorable moments. He rebuilt the Manly Sea Eagles into a formidable team, leading them to two premierships. His tenure at Canterbury also saw success, although they fell short in the 2014 final against South Sydney. Throughout his career, Hasler has been known for his unique approach, characterized by his distinctive personality and innovative methods.

“[The players] need to know that you’re vulnerable. That you have that real care factor.” – Des Hasler

Hasler’s influence extends beyond the field, as he maintains strong relationships with his players. His ability to connect with them on a personal level is a testament to his coaching style. “All coaches, if you ask them, the players are human. They are real people, they experience every emotion that you do,” Hasler explained.

Impact and Legacy

Hasler’s impact on the game and his players is profound. His former players, like Kieran Foran, have followed him across clubs, and even those whose careers have ended, such as Manase Fainu, remain in contact with him. This speaks volumes about his dedication and the respect he commands.

As Hasler continues to navigate the challenges with the Titans, his legacy in the NRL remains intact. His journey is a testament to the unpredictable nature of coaching, where there is “no clear map, no handbook,” as he puts it. Yet, his passion for the game and his players endures.

Looking ahead, the future of Hasler’s coaching career may be uncertain, but his contributions to the sport are undeniable. As he celebrates his 500th game, the moments of triumph and the connections he has forged stand as a testament to his enduring legacy in rugby league.
