Maroons and NRL legend Petero Civoniceva has expressed his confidence in David Fifita’s potential to reclaim his Queensland State of Origin jersey. This comes as Fifita prepares to reignite his career under the guidance of Wayne Bennett at the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2026. Since his debut in 2019, Fifita has been a key player in eight Origin games, contributing significantly to the Maroons’ series win in 2023.
However, the talented back-rower faced a surprising setback in 2024 when coach Billy Slater opted to leave him out of the squad for the entire series. Injuries further hampered his chances of a recall in 2025, leaving questions about whether Slater would have reconsidered his decision.
Fifita’s Fresh Start at South Sydney
The 2026 season marks a new chapter for Fifita as he transitions from the Gold Coast Titans to the Rabbitohs. Civoniceva, who played under Bennett during his time with the Brisbane Broncos, believes that the veteran coach will be instrumental in unlocking Fifita’s full potential.
“Dave is just a wonderful athlete,” Civoniceva told AAP on Tuesday. “It’s been tough with injuries and no doubt he’s done all the rehab and he’s primed. To link up with Wayne Bennett … who’s been a wonderful motivator and influence on so many players … he would have had some great words of advice and he’s going to play some amazing football.”
Overcoming Challenges and Injuries
Fifita’s journey has not been without its hurdles. Last season, he managed to play only eight games for the Titans due to recurring ankle issues, which necessitated three surgeries. Now, with a clean bill of health, he is eager to make an impact at South Sydney.
At the launch of the Indigenous health initiative Deadly Choices in Brisbane, Fifita reflected on his recovery and the support he’s received. “Having three surgeries on your ankle takes a toll on you,” he said. “I am over that now. I have the right people around me and a good mentor in Wayne.”
Reuniting with a Trusted Mentor
Fifita’s relationship with Bennett dates back to his teenage years when he first joined the Broncos. The opportunity to work with Bennett again is something Fifita cherishes deeply. “To be reunited with him means a lot. He can give me a hug and be honest with me. I have someone to listen to me, have faith in me and trust in me,” he shared.
As he sets his sights on a return to the Origin stage, Fifita remains optimistic about his prospects. “For sure. I am always confident in my ability,” he asserted. “Last year I only played eight or nine games … but my ankle wasn’t right.”
“When my ankle is right and I can chat to someone about it and I feel they listen … all is well. I started pre-season early in November and the rehab and conditioning coaches have done a really good job. Fingers crossed I would love to be in that jersey again. I am a Queensland boy. There is a lot of hard work out ahead.”
Looking Ahead: A Potential Origin Comeback
The 25-year-old’s determination to don the Queensland jersey once more is palpable. As he embarks on this new journey with the Rabbitohs, the rugby league community will be watching closely to see if Fifita can fulfill the promise that Civoniceva and others see in him.
With Bennett’s mentorship and a renewed focus on his physical health, Fifita’s path back to the Origin arena seems promising. His story is a testament to resilience and the power of mentorship in professional sports.
The coming seasons will reveal whether Fifita’s hard work and dedication will pay off, potentially marking one of the most compelling comebacks in recent NRL history.
